Good health, sweet family, many blessings and lots of sewing.

Quiet

It's been quiet around here for a change. Hope you're taking the time to rest up and enjoy the holidays too.

I've been hanging with the fam, trying my hand at creating some bag patterns and teaching myself through trial and error using a bunch of ugly fabric (which I am not showing you because my ugly fabric might be your favorite!- no judging here!)

For now, here's my evening project.

Pink daisy up next #gelpolish

A Christmas gift to myself- Sensationail. I love painted nails but am HARD on polish so this at home gel stuff is pretty great.  I did the red last week and it did chip on two nails but I think that was because I didn't paint the end of the nails as recommended. You really do have to follow the directions carefully but even then it was a win. Normal polish doesn't last 24 hours on my nails without chipping all over the place. (This gel stuff is kindof a $%*&! to take off though!)

Looking forward to seeing you all in 2013 and stepping things back up a bit!

Until then, enjoy the last bit of 2012.

All the best my friends!

Bagaholic: Duffle Bag Love

My name is Jennifer and I'm a bagaholic.

There, I admitted it. Feels good to put that out there.

I seriously love bags the way some people love purses, shoes and jewelry.

And I've discovered I love making them too.

Jump on in there- it's fun.

This is my latest love. The duffle bag!

Duffle Bag

Duffle Bag

I used this pattern and pretty much stuck to the directions for the first go-round. Now that I've made one, I want to make another (and another, and another) but will be tweaking a few things along the way.

Duffle Bag

Duffle Bag
This one is a Christmas gift and it's a good thing it has to get wrapped in a hurry or else it might find it's way to my closet where it would be so happy to live.

Isn't the Lillybelle fabric beautiful? I used all I had on this bag so I'll definitely be ordering some more. The green leaf fabric is Denyse Schmidt from JoAnns and the gray is also from JoAnns.

Duffle Bag
I've got some other bag ideas rumbling around in my head so I'll be sharing some new tutorials with you in the new year.

Are there any bag patterns or tutorials you just love? What's your favorite?

OK now, I've gotta go get this baby wrapped before I change my mind! :)

Merry Christmas y'all!

Tote Bag LOVE

How many swaps have you done?

Mouthy Stitches 2
This fall I got a spot in the Mouthy Stitches swap (my second go-round) and boy did those swap mamas do me right!  These bags were finished months ago but I've been remiss in showing them to you! Sorry for my tardiness!  I was super excited about getting Kat of Diary of a Flutter Kat as my secret partner.

I love her style and appreciation of color so it was easy for me to pick out what to make for her. She and I have very similar tastes. This is the tote I made for her.

I decided to make her something I would love in hopes that she would love it too. It was hard to send this one off but from her feedback, I'd love it! *sigh of relief* And yes indeed she did.

It took FOREVER and a day to get to Australia but it FINALLY made it. Whew! There was a lot fretting going on over here and Flickr stalking to see if she had received it yet.

We all made totebags from this tutorial and a matching key fob. The inside of Kat's has an aqua lining and a Melody Miller typewriter that I know she loves.  That amazing text print is Madrona Road by Voilet Craft. Love it!

Then, I was SO lucky to get this A-MAH-ZING tote from Nikki at Sewquine. I couldn't believe my good luck when the mailman delivered this to me. I mean OMG- I was thrilled!

the front
I'd totally admired this one on Flickr but didn't know it was for me.
She did a great job of keeping me in suspense!

Look at the beautiful cathedral windows, the happy colors, the text fabrics.
My-oh-my she had down me to a T!

And then there is the lining. Oh my the lining. My all time favorite aqua print- that Farmdale floral. Oh my oh my. I love it so! It means so much to me that she shared some of her precious stash with me!

The entire tote is just so fab. Quilters are so generous and so very kind. I'm very lucky indeed! Thank you so much Nikki!

Scrappy Stockings

I was so inspired by Nancy's tutorial for her scrappy stockings that I had to make some for my kiddos.

Scrappy Stockings 2012
The Christmas fabric is Cherry Christmas by Aneela Hoey and the rest are scraps from my stash.

Scrappy Stockings 2012
The lining of my daughter's is my last bit of yardage of a favorite fabric, left over from a dress my Mama made for her as a baby. My son's is a mustard dot on gray from Kaffe Fassett.

Scrappy Stockings 2012
I hope they love these through the years and enjoy discovering treasures and treats in them on Christmas day.

Scrappy Stockings 2012
They coordinate with the tree skirt without being too matchy matchy I think.

Now I want to make some for J and me!

We also made a trip to the mall to see Santa. Little buddy wouldn't have any part of sitting on Santa's lap but my daughter was excited and chuckled through the whole visit. She had her hands up by her mouth giggling the whole time. Can't blame her- the whole concept is a bit strange.

Hope your holidays are merry and bright! Are you whipping up any last minute Christmas projects?

Jennifer

Leah Day's Coming to Sew South!

BIG NEWS!
I'm SO excited to announce today that the super nice and super talented, Free Motion Quilting Queen, LEAH DAY is coming to Sew South and will be our very special guest speaker at the retreat. WOO HOO!

I'm SO excited Leah's joining us! Leah has a new Craftsy class where she teaches various free motion quilting designs using Amy Gibson's BOM series. I just signed up and plan to make FMQ something to work on in 2013.

I'm so excited about hearing some tips and tricks from Leah at Sew South and can't wait to see some of her beautiful work in person!

Here's a little more about Leah!

I got started quilting in 2005 because I wanted a double wedding ring quilt to celebrate my wedding. Unfortunately I used all the wrong materials (satin and silk) and all the wrong tools (paper templates) and experienced total epic fail. Over the next several years, I learned how to piece and applique, then decided to tackle the hardest challenge: free motion quilting. Learning free motion quilting and creating so many designs was like an artistic study and I now enjoy experimenting daily with the textures and designs that can be stitched in thread over fabric.

Who's excited for Sew South?!

Tutorial: Starry Tree Skirt & Giveaway!

Ready for the last tutorial in the Deck the Halls series? Need something sparkly under your tree? Allow me to present the Starry Night Tree Skirt!

12 foundation pieced pointy stars add playful personality to your Christmas tree.
Sneak peek of the tutorial on my blog tomorrow #deckthehalls

40" x 40" Tree Skirt

Please read through all directions before sewing. All seams are 1/4".
Materials:
Star pattern makes a 10" x 10" finished block
2.25 yards of background fabric (with leftovers)
4 fat quarters of printed fabric
half yard of binding fabric
1.5 yards backing fabric
batting 43" x 43"
4 feet of coordinating ribbon

Cutting:
Background fabric:
You are going to cut 4.5" x 4.5" squares for 12 star blocks. 8 per block = 96 squares total.

1. Cut 10 strips 4.5" x WOF (42") and keep folded.
2. Cut (5) 4.5" x 4.5" squares from the folded strips.
3. For the center of the tree skirt, Cut two pieces 10.5" x 20.5".

Feature Print Fabric:
You are going to cut 12 "4.5" x 4.5" squares for the centers of the stars. You will be making 3 star blocks from each fat quarter. 3 stars from each print = 24 of each arm print and 3 of each center.

1. Cut (3) 4.5" x 4.5" squares from each fat quarter.
2. Cut (24) 4.5" x 2.5" rectangles from each fat quarter (8 for each star.)

Assembly:

1. Foundation piece your star block sections. (Here's a beginner's guide to foundation piecing.)

starry night collage 1

Now, lay out each piece and sew sections 1 & 2 together. Sew section 1-2 to section 3. Then sew section 1-2-3 to section 4.

starry night collage 2

3. Place your blocks in an alternating pattern and decide on your layout.
4. Sew the bottom row of 4 stars together.
5. Sew each middle row star to either side of the center fabric panel.
6. Sew the top row of 4 stars together.
7. Sew rows 1 & 2 together then rows 3 & 4.
8. Sew the top and bottom half together.
9. Quilt as desired.
10. Find the center, trace a circle (I used a bowl) in the center. Mine is 5.75" wide. Draw a line from that circle's to the edge of the quilt, in between the middle star blocks.
11. Now take a DEEP BREATH, grab some fabric scissors and cut along that pencil line and cut out the circle. I know, it is scary but you can do it!

12. Now, make your binding strips 2.5" and bind your quilt. The curve in the center is not so curvy that you need to use bias binding. Regular binding works fine. Just sew slowly!! I like to sew my binding on the back side, flip it over to the front and machine sew it down on the front.

13. Lastly, cut 4 12" pieces of coordinating ribbon for the ties. Mark 5" and 10" from the center, along the under side of the binding. This is where you will attach your ties. Fold one end of the ribbon under a half inch then fold over again and sew onto the under side of the finished binding. Make sure the tail of the ribbon is trailing away from the tree skirt. (Alternately you could attach the ribbon before sewing on your binding.) Repeat for the remaining ribbons.

Ta-da! Your Starry Night tree skirt is complete!
