Hexie Help

So, I want to try hexies.

These above are from The Savvy Stitch.  Aren't they amazing?

I feel like it is high time I give this a try. Plus I have a little sewing time coming up this weekend that would be perfect for this kind of project.

So, can anyone point me in the right direction and get me started?

Can I make templates at home? Is it worth buying a template? If so, where? JoAnns?

What size hexies do most people make?

Any special tips?

Would love any and all suggestions! Thanks a bunch!!

Jennifer

Things I Am Loving

This week has been all about:

Downton Abbey

Please tell me you are watching this. It is just SO GOOD! I am midway into Season 2 and love it all- the characters, the drama, the love, the costumes, the accents!

I find myself thinking and speaking with a British accent- quite a change from my Southern one. :)

You can watch Season 1 through Netflix or Amazon Prime and then part of Season 2 online at PBS as it is airing on Sunday evenings on TV in the US.

Go. Watch. It. You will LOVE it!

When I haven't been watching, I've been sewing and have been loving foundation piecing.

Not paper piecing with the little cut outs--this time I've been sewing right through the paper.

And it's fun and kinda awesome.

I've also been loving my new Quilt Pro for Mac software.  I'm still learning but this seems to be a good alternative for EQ since I have a Mac. I like that I can plan layouts, create blocks, alter existing blocks, try out colors and fabrics, print foundation patterns and get rotary cutting charts as well as fabric requirements.

I know quilt math is good for me but I can't say I enjoy it!

I am still loving Loulouthi:

Will it ever wear out its welcome? Not any time soon for me.

Also been loving these little buddies.
My little guy has started walking! He's a bit wobbly but so proud of himself!
This is his serious face- rarely seen!

And my sweet girl is in a dress up costume of some sort every day. I love it. This was before school one morning when I just couldn't believe how grown up she is getting!

Yes, loving those buddies indeed.

So tell me... what are you loving these days?

PS: Don't forget to come back tomorrow for all the details about the Modern Mini Challenge!! You WON'T want to miss it!

Saturday Spotlight: Valerie

Oh you're going to love Valerie!

I met her at the Sewing Summit  after being blog buddies last year. Funny, I had to go all the way in Utah to meet her even though she lives just a few hours away from me in NC.

I am  thrilled to be able to introduce you to her today.

She's got a great sense of humor and is very real and down to earth- not to mention she has fabulous sewing skills!

Meet Val!

Super Fabulous Surprises

Don't you love super happy mail days? I seriously love the anticipation of getting something fun it the mail.  This is probably why I enjoy swaps- so much fun getting all of those packages!

But today, not a single swap package arrived but low and behold there was a super fabulous surprise in the mail for me today.

Look!!

My sweet and fabulous friend Lindsey of LR Stitched sent me one of her fabulous and beautiful wallets. Oh Linds- I love it so!

I was so inspired by Lindsey's fabulous wallets last week that I tried one too, and I'm sure you recall that my attempt came up short. Well, Linds, sent me this amazing one, "just because!" How's that for an awesome mail day? I am lucky to have such a sweet and thoughtful friend.

Now, if you want one of these beauties, pop on over to Lindsey's shop because she has a few available that you could claim for your own.

I am off to load mine up with wallety stuff and admire her handiwork.

Hmmmm, it's so pretty - now I might need to make a new bag to go with it!

Mouthy Stitches

Three fabulous bloggy friends (Hadley, Susan and Cindy) are hosting a super fun swap that I couldn't pass up.
Mouthy Stitches

The Mouthy Stitches group filled up quickly, and I was lucky enough to secure a spot for this, the first round. We are making zip pouches for our partners and woo hoo! I got my assigned partner yesterday! I'm excited and off to stalk her mosaic now to gather ideas...

Wish me luck!

Trying New Things

What have you been sewing this week?

I've been trying new things.

So far, so good.

Paper pieced this little mini:

The whole thing is 8" x 8" and those blocks are each 3" finished. I used Tamiko's pattern, reduced it by 50% and traced it on to freezer paper. After ironing the pieces on the back of the fabric, I cut out each piece and used my Add -a-Quarter ruler to give me the 1/4" seam allowance for each side. (That ruler rocks!) You can use a regular ruler if you don't have an Add - a- Quarter.

I trimmed the first square down to 2.5" then added the outer triangles.

I used a scant quarter inch seam for the outer triangles and think I would use that for the whole block when making these again.  You have to be careful not to cover the points of the squares when sewing on the triangles.

I trimmed the blocks to 3.5" and tried my best to center everything. They aren't perfect but they are pretty good.

I will admit that the first go round of these blocks I trimmed too small (3" x 3") and when I went to sew them together, the points of the squares were cut off. Boo. :(
You can see what I mean below.
They aren't sewn together but see how close the points are to the edge? Not good.
Plus those inside squares are not so straight! Oh well. I'm doing a lot of learning these days!

Next up was my attempt at improv curves. This was fun and I am definitely trying this again with cuter fabric. (This is my test fabric!)

Then last night I spent 2 hours on this little guy.

Y'all I am not kidding, 2 hours seems like a long time to spend on a 4" block! A very sweet friend lent me her copy of Patchwork Patterns 318 so this was my first attempt at one of those. I think it would have been easier (and maybe quicker) if I had made it bigger.

I followed my same method of tracing on freezer paper and cutting out, ironing on, adding seam allowances, etc. I forgot of course that the image is reversed when you trace it so I had to make some adjustments along the way.

It is not perfect and I couldn't get that part on the left exactly right but I am pretty pleased with the little guy. With the borders, the block is 6" x 6."

Now though, what do I do with it??

So tell me, after reading all of this, are you game for a little paper piecing yourself? Any suggestions for me? Bring them on!

Oh and mark your calendars for a really fun blog hop and contest coming your way in February. You won't want to miss it! That's all I'm saying for now!

OK y'all! Have a great Friday!

Off Kilter and a Lesson Learned

Not everything I sew turns out great.
I know, you're shocked, right?!
Just kidding. I am sure you feel the same way.

I find it so frustrating though when I am all fired up about a project then it doesn't turn out as I had planned. Especially when I use fabric I love and am hoarding!

But we have to fail in order to get better, and we have to try in order to learn.
So here's to learning, stumbling, and trying again.

This is my first attempt at a wallet. I love the outside but the inside is deceptively inept.

(Not sure why it looks a bit wonky in the picture because it is actually quite straight.)

Oh it looks pretty but the pockets are not the correct size - not functional (too big AND some too small) and the places to hold money are way too big and loose. Why I didn't think to try out all of the pockets before I sewed it together I am not sure. I won't do that again!

Now I was bummed for sure about my mistakes and rather disappointed at the final result. I was rather excited about using this but I am forging ahead and not letting it get the best of me. There is more fabric calling my name and more projects to try. Let's see how today goes!

Wishing you sewing success or at least positive learning experiences today!
