My favorite costume was as a chick hatching from an egg. Had yellow tights on, and a foam egg bottom with a piece of it as a cap (jagged edges for effect). I wore glasses and I affized feathers to my glasses as a "mask". Worked out so well I won a prize for best costume..that was a fun party.

I don't remember how old I was, but in elementary school one year I wanted to be a keyboard (my keyboard that I owned, specifically), so my poor mom spent hours painting a box so that I could be this big, walking keyboard piano. She did an awesome job, but I think she was grateful the next year when I just wanted to be a princess. christina112358 at gmail dot com

This would be majorly frowned upon today (and maybe it was back then too, but I didn't notice). I was a pack of Kool cigarettes, lol. My uncle made my costume out of a big cardboard box and I had a few cigarettes coming out of the top of the box next to my head. It was actually pretty great. ;0

I remember one year my mom came home with magic markers, brads, and poster board. She made me a die (as in single dice) and my sister a clock with moving hands. We thought she was so amazing! Everyone gushed over how great they were and how unique! It never occurred to my sister and I until years later that my mom probably couldn't afford costumes that Halloween and she managed to outfit the two of us so that we never knew.

Kathryn said...

I'll always remember the ballerina outfit I wore at about age 6. thanks for the giveaway.

The only one I can remember is being a princess. I think I might have used that costume quite a few times. :-)

When I was growing up so many years ago, I don,t think people were nearly so creative! I was usually a ghost and my brother was usually a hobo! And our costumes were no less elaborate than anyone else's were!

wobblybobbin said...

I love reading all these! For years all five of us kids would go as gypsies - I think because we couldn't afford costumes. It was a lot of fun every time.

Jennie P. said...

My favorite was when I was Casper the Ghost. I just loved that cartoon.

Sharon said...

Seems like the only costume I remember is dressing like a Hobo -- baggy men's clothes, hat, bandana tied on a stick and a dirty face. We didn't have much for store bought costumes and had to make do with what we had. Thanks for the lovely giveaway.

Shelly said...

My friend in 4th grade and I dressed as a three legged, two headed mummy. Her mom tore up I don't know how many sheets and wrapped us together. We were doing great on the treats that night, until after several hours we lost our 3 legged rhythm and fell in a big snow bank (did I mention I grew up in Alaska? We were so cold after that!) I just remember the two of us shivering and laughing hysterically.

Jessica said...

Pumpkin :) I can't wait to dress my kids as cute pumpkins one day, lol!

Sarah said...

One year, my mom sewed a princess costume for me and a witch costume for my sister. I loved them both and it was the only year she sewed our costumes for Halloween. The pictures are the sweetest and I wish we still had the costumes. I believe that would have been about 1982 or 1983. I hope to get better at sewing and make my boys something next year!

Anna said...

My favorite costume? Once I was a flip-flop. I made it myself out of paper mache. It wasn't terribly comfortable, but it was AWESOME.

Jennifer Gail said...

I dressed up as a bag lady came home and I scared the dog. He scared me barking. LOL

My mom made the coolest jack-o-lantern costume for me one year. I'm pretty sure she still has it in her garage somewhere, so I'm hoping my daughter might want to wear it when she's big enough in a few years.

Sarah Craig said...

It's funny, but I really don't remember any of my Halloween costumes - I just remember having a wonderful time trick-or-treating until I was about 12. That was the first year that someone put a razor blade in an apple, and trick-or-treating got scary for all of us. Never the same after that!! Thanks for the chance to win, though!

My favorite costume was a bunch of grapes. I wore black and my mom blew up purple balloons and pinned them all over me. Then she made me a felt and pipe cleaner hat that was the leaves and vines.

My favorite was one of those stupid costumes with the weird plastic mask (seriously)! The mask was white, with a curlicue on top - my sisters and I referred to it as the "ice cream mask" but years later, realized it must have been :)

What's funny is that I'm making my 6yr. old son's Halloween costume right now. Leftover batting makes for great skeleton bones:). One year my mom made gypsy costumes for my sister and I. The skirts were made from scraps and were super crazy and colorful. The best part, though, was the earrings. We didn't have pierced ears yet so my mom tied a piece of string to some mason jar lids and hung them around our ears. :)

When I was a child I was always dressed up as a ghost. There wasn't that much money to affort in our family (with 6 children) and a bedsheet in white would make a perfect ghost! I have a really vivid memory one year of going as a tube of toothpaste and being super pleased about it. I wore my dad's white wool ribbed winter hat - that was the toothpaste cap, and I copied the Crest logo onto a white pillowcase.

elnorac said...

Okay, so maybe it wasn't my favorite costume, but it was the one I remember the most vividly. I dressed as a devil in fourth grade and as I walked past one house, a small dog ran out and bit me on the back of my ankle. Guess he didn't like the costume! My dad went to the house, where the owners assured him they would make sure the dog couldn't get out again and bite anyone else. Dad also checked to make sure the dog had a rabies vaccination.

I made a spider costume one year that turned out great. I used fake fur to make a body covering, and used black tights to make 8 legs. I strung them together so 4 would hang off of each of my arms. I wore a solid black long sleeve, long leg body suit underneath and I painted my face. I sewed the entire costume by hand, because I didn't own a sewing machine. That was probably my favorite. But there have been quite a few. Halloween is by far my favorite holiday. Happy Halloween everyone!

I think the best one was a creepy monster bug thing my gramma made for me. My dad brought home this ugly rubber monster mask and my gramma made a costume to go with it.

I don't know if it was my favorite, but my most memorable was an M&M made with cardboard and felt. I couldn't put my hand down because they were stuck through the cardboard! And I was too wide to go through some hedges.

My favorite one was when I came up with my own costume for our band's half time show. we always dressed up on Halloween. Well I didn't have a costume, so I made my own. I was the Masque of red death. I was really into edgar allen poe then.

one year i was a bag of jelly beans! i had a clear trash bag stuffed with mini balloons and it was really fun - though difficult to walk on the sidewalk next to someone. :)

We didn't do Halloween as a child here in the UK, but I knitted (on a knitting machine) my daughter a black cat outfit when she was a toddler: she looked awesome

My grandparents brought home a kimono from a trip to Japan. One year my Mom let me wear it for Halloween. I'm sure the chopsticks in my RED hair was a dead give away that I wasn't Japanese! :)

My fave was a hippie, it was all homemade with old clothes found in the attic. We got to search through the cosets too and it was so much fun.

Not a big dressing up fan as a kid. I don't remember what I dressed up like, but I did borrow my grandmother's witch costume before. I think that was fifth grade and haven't dressed up since. Wow! I guess I really am not much fun!

My favorite costume was not the most original, but surely a lot of fun! I was a Vampiress! My costume was a blood red crushed velvet dress with a long black cape, a ghostly white face, crimson lips and vampire teeth. And I LOVED it! :-)Thanks so much for the chance to win some beautiful Pagoda Lullaby!!

I was very excited to wear my Kooky Spooks costume back in the day. (I had to look up the name... They were the horrible plastic costumes with the inflatable head that you wore as a hat and your body was covered with a poncho-looking contraption.) The early 80s were awesome! Thank you for the chance to win!

I had no idea what Halloween was when I was little, but if I did I think I would have been a Mermaid because I spent so much of my time swimming!

Thanks heaps, Tania.

I can't remember a favorite costume... most were random getups put together by finding and using things around the house! Thanks!
