I Spy Hexie Quilt

I spy with my little eye... a tricycle, a monster, a fox, and a finished quilt!

hexie ispy 1

Last week I read about Ali's contest the Festival of Hexagons and it was exactly the hot poker I needed to light a fire under me and get going on the I Spy quilt I've had on my to-do list forever.

hexie ispy2
I've been hoarding collecting a few Heather Ross fabrics (many thanks to my friends Courtney and Christine) and all of the other adorable prints came from the I Spy Fabric Swap and the Spoonflower Fabric swaps I participated in last year.

To make life easier for myself, I used my Accuquilt hexie die cut to cut out the paper hexagons. Cutting those out by hand is so tedious and frankly, I don't have time for that so using my Accuquilt die cutter was the way to go. I must admit I bought the hexie die exactly for this purpose!

I had originally planned for this to be a small wall hanging but the more hexies I made, the bigger the project became, and it seemed a quilt was the way to go.

I'm glad too because now the kids can lay down on the floor and play I Spy. If it was on the wall I am not sure it would actually get used very much.

I spy a scooter, a robot, a cupcake, an owl...

The hexies are machine appliqued and machine quilted in an echo pattern around the star. I was ever so thankful for my auto-lift-easy pivot function on my presser foot as I sewed all of these on.

hexie ispy3
For the back I used one of my all time favorite IKEA prints-  I'm in LOVE with text prints! Maybe a text print swap is in order next!

The quilt measures 46" x 52".

Thanks Ali for motivating me!

Festival of Hexies
This is the first big contest I've entered so fingers crossed. There are some really great prizes up for grabs! Pop on over to check out all of the entries.

Wish me luck!

xo,
Jennifer

So cute! You have so many wonderful fabrics in this! Did you cut away the back to remove the papers, or what was your method?

I love your quilt. It is fantastic. I will have to start hoarding some fabrics to make one like this.
Have you thought about printing some of the pictures onto paper (photograph the hexies, print them out and then back them with pretty paper) so the children can play a find-the-picture game. You could back the cards with text paper.
Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful creation.

Jennifer - This is beautiful and I bet the kids LOVE it. I made the needle book from Hexa-Go-Go and I'm itching to start another hexie project. I just need to decide what it will be. The links on the site are beautiful, but I really love your quilt and the fussy cutting of the I Spy hexies. Great job!

I love hex and I think the machine applique is a really nice way to incorporate them. What I really love about this quilt is that bright blue (aqua?) border with grey and white. It's gorgeous!

So cute! I have a question about the fabric cutter. I mostly make donation quilts using 5" squares of some variety. I have been thinking of buying a GoBaby with the 5" cutter. Is there a lot of waste? Cutting fabric is my biggest challenge in the quilting process and I wondered if a cutter would help me be more accurate.

Amazing. Who would think to space the hexies out? Love it.

Put me down for a text fabric swap. I just bought something fabulous this week with ampersands, and wondered if there's something wrong with me for loving text prints.
And, the hexie I Spy is darling. Thanks for sharing!

Jennifer - How is the IKEA fabric? I saw that text print the other day and loved it, but was worried about the quality of the material. Love to hear your thoughts!
