Seriously, couldn't put it down. In 5 days I read at every opportunity and soaked up every word of the 572 pages. It was just as good as as its predecessor, Discovery of Witches.
Shadow of Night is the second book in the Discovery of Witches trilogy and here's what I love about this series.
- The love story- who doesn't love a good love story?
- The characters- I love Diana (the witch) and Matthew (the vampire) and their quirks, their depth, their sensibilities and their families and friends.
- These books are smart- intense historical references add so much to the story.
- Shadow of Night takes you back into Elizabethan England and holds your attention there. Seriously- I don't usually like historical fiction but I was rivited.
- There's lots of action- quick paced twists and turns that keep the story moving and advancing.
Well done, Deborah Harkness! It's a good read indeed!
Now, y'all go get a copy for yourselves and see what I mean!

Hmmm, I'll add it to my Goodreads queue! Thanks!
I am rereading the first one now to refresh on the story. I loved the first one and can't wait to devour the second!
You have me sold. Well-written historical fiction mixed in with some mysticism and set in the Elizabethan Era? That has my name written all over it! Thanks so much for posting about this. I love a good book recommendation.
I read the first book based on your review and I just picked up Shadow of Night from the library today. I can't wait to start reading it :)
Yes - I'm so glad you recommended these because I LOVED the first. Did you know she is an actual genius? PhD in history, specializing in medicine and science. Made me feel better about not getting most of the alchemy stuff.
Bet you used to watch Buffy!
I'm reading it right now. Unfortunately, i have company from out of town that will be staying with me for a week....I may have to be rude so I can finish!
I am reading it right now. Great book so far!
You got me hooked on the first with your original post and I have the second...just don't want to finish it as I know it will be amazing, so I haven't started :D I know this makes no sense
