Sewing With Voiles

Have you tried voiles? They are AMAZING! Seriously y'all- I love them. Smooth and buttery, light as air and full of color, Anna Maria Horner voiles are sewing heaven.

Last month Westminster Fibers/Free Spirit sent me this stack of Loulouthi voiles to play with (thank you!), and I happily whipped up a quilt with them.
AMH voiles

For the front, I used an almost whole cloth method as I loved that citrusy floral print and the way the pale blue solid framed the field of flowers.
The back became a crazy, improv patchwork of pattern. I must admit, I changed my mind plenty of times before settling on this. The back is BUSY but kinda fun and in the end, it was liberating to slice and dice and sew back together different pieces of the puzzle.

A little free-motion quilting and wha-la!

This quilt is the perfect summer weight as it is so light and airy. No matter what the weather, I like a cover when on the couch or reading on my bed and this is the perfect quilt for doing just that.
But this quilt is not for me. I made it with my lovely Grandmother in mind for her 95th birthday. 95 y'all! That's impressive. She's a fabulous lady, still very sharp, and I am happy to say she loved it. It's her summer quilt (she has a winter one from me) and it's already getting lots of use and love.  We had her 95th birthday party last week, and I was pleased as could be to give it to her in person. I love her dearly.
I loved sewing with voiles so much that I have ordered a stack of Little Folks voiles for a quilt for me.  I think it would be perfect on the end of our bed.

Here are some thoughts and things to know about sewing with voiles:

  • Voiles are buttery soft, a little sheer and very light-weight.
  • They would make heavenly pillowcases, and I am thinking of using voile for my Tova tunic.
  • I didn't find that I needed to pin any more than usual when piecing, which was a relief. Pinning = not my fave.
  • It did seem a bit slippery when sewing on the binding but that was it.
  • I quilted as I normally would but did change to a new needle first.
  • You can read more about voiles from Anna Maria Horner.

So what about you? Have you sewn with voiles before? What did you think? If not, have I convinced you yet?

xo,
Jennifer

I love the quilt you made ! Happy birthday to her !

I wanted to back a quilt with voile but I was afraid of it because it's so soft and light and you can almost see through it ! I did not wanted to ruin it (it's a little more expensive than regular coton fabric). I might have to try though..

Oh, I love the quilt and the picture of you with your grandma - so sweet! I have a stack of little folks I am still trying to decide on the right layout for. I think I need some solid voiles to make them pop!
This is definitely inspiring me to cut into them!

I just started a Little Folks quilt too! Still trying to decide on the final layout. @Courtney, I've used cream voile and I love the effect!

Love your quilt and your grandma is great. 95, wow. I've sewn with voile, I made several scarves and two tunics. Love them. I used my scraps for a couple of doll quilts, for the little girls.

Happy Birthday Grandma! My husband's grandmother is turning 93 (in Charlotte) this year. Awesome. I've never sewn with voile. Karen always has some beautiful ones but I never even consider buying them. I should! www.paperstarfish.prettyposies.com

I made some scarves with voiles for gifts in December. It is lovely to work with and I tried hard to pin inside the seam allowance because I found the pins left noticeable holes. I may use clips next time.

Haven't done much quilting with them yet but I'll keep it in mind.

The look on your grandmother's face is wonderful!

Sounds heavenly, but I haven't made that leap yet. I've considered using it to make a scarf, but making a quilt hadn't crossed my mind. Thanks for the inspiration!

i personally haven't sewn with them yet but i have heard that using a 1/2 inch seam allowance instead of a 1/4 inch is better since the fabric is so much more delicate.

I haven't tried the voiles yet but have used shot cottons and they sound somewhat similar - are they?? (I love them btw)

Happy Birthday Grandma!
I adore sewing with voiles, in fact I may be slightly addicted to the smooshy softness of voile quilts :) Yours, well your grandmothers, is a beautiful one. Now all I have to work on is getting people to send them to me for free lol

You and grams look so cute together!

Beautiful quilt too. As yet, I've never even seen voile in RL! I really want to make the darling ranges dress pattern out of voile, but having just splurged on my SEWING SUMMIT ticket, I might just have to wait a while :-)

Oh, i'll just say it once more... SEWING SUMMIT!!! See you in SL,UT friend!!!

Happy 95th Birthday to your beautiful Grandma what a fabulous age, she looks much younger!! I have never used voiles but have been thinking about using them for making scarves. Hugs

I agree; they are beautiful! I have some stashed, and am about to use one for a Wiksten tank. Happy birthday to your grandmother! The quilt you made for her is lovely.

Lovely! I see the voiles at my shop, and I actually really want to make a shirt for me, but they are just to expensive. I am hoping they make it to the 40% off section, which is where I do most of my shopping!

I have a couple tunic patterns I've been wanting to try and since summer weather appears to already be here you may have convinced me to bust them out. And aaawww, my Gram just turned 80 in February and I made her a birthday quilt too, seriously hope she'll be needing another one when she turns 95 :-)

Happy birthday to her! I'm making my soon to be 95 year old granny a quilt for her birthday too :o)

I bought one beautiful piece of the AMH Voile, but have done nothing with it yet. Maybe now I will get more and try something.

I haven't sewn with voile since high school, but really want to try again.
Your grandmother is a beauty and I can see where you get your lovely smile.
Happy birthday, Grandma!

I want to do a whole cloth quilt with AMH voile. Question... what type of batting would you use?

I've just ordered voile of my own designs that I have with Spoonflower and have been nervous about diving into the project. I am wanting to make a coverlet. Your fun experience sets me more at ease. Your project is priceless.
