Really Good Reads: I Love a Good Book!

I love a good book.

The sink your teeth into it, can't get enough of it, eat, sleep and drink the characters kind. The kind that lingers in your mind days after you've turned the last page and closed the book.

I loved the Help and The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (both Southern favorites.)

I really loved the Twilight series (read it 3 times,) of course all the Harry Potters too, and have just finished the Hunger Games (first book.) That one has been rolling around in my mind since last week. I need to pick up the other two in the series.

So it seems I am really drawn to sci-fi and southern literature (crazy combo- those two together) but I have also found myself enjoying the Elm Creek Quilts novels by Jennifer Chiaverini. So far my favorite one was the Runaway Quilt  but she has a new book coming out called Sonoma Rose.

Dutton publishing sent me a copy of Sonoma Rose, and I'm looking forward to getting into the story. It takes place in the 1920s during prohibition and features the story of Rosa Diaz and her family as they make a new life for themselves in a California vineyard.  Rosa discovers that her husband has decided armed bootlegging is his new career, and she flees with her children, concerned with their safety. There is a love story in here too, Lars, the father of two of her 4 children comes with her to California.

Of course she takes quilts with her on her journey- it is a quilting novel after all. I don't have to stop to think which quilts of mine I would grab if I had to pack up and leave with just a few of my belongings!

The story sounds intriguing, right? I think it should be an entertaining read. You can pick up a copy in stores next week.

Until then, you can sit back and enjoy the many fabulous mini quilts from the Modern Mini Quilt Challenge Blog Hop.

Then come back and tell me what you are reading these days. I'm always on the look-out for a great book!

The mini blog hop has been such a treat. I love minis, and it's been so great to see how many different directions you can take this project. I don't think I've ever been so moved by a book as I was by Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. It's worth a look. Thanks again for hosting the blog hop. I can't wait to see all the entries!

I love southern literature too! Have you read "Saving CeeCee Honeycutt" by Beth Hoffman? It's a great read. Also, it's not really southern but I totally loved "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. I'm going to take your recommendation and read Hunger Games. Thanks! I love good book finds!

Great selection of books. I too just finished The Hungry Games and immediately started the 2nd which I'm almost done with (the ipad is a wonderful thing).
I've loved your blog hop and have my mini cut out and ready to sew. I'm going with a table runner as we just moved and got a new dinning table.

Not current reading but I loved The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. I have wanted to visit the Carolinas ever since reading it.

I have to totally agree with Mitzi that "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" is an amazing work! FUN to read, too!

I just finished re-reading the Hunger Games Trilogy, and now I'm reading a "story" about how Christ came to be who he came to be.... before he was mortal. Very interesting read.....

I'm SO excited to read the new Elm Creek book! I didn't know there was one coming so soon!

Thanks for sharing!

When talking books, I'd say let's have a seat and grab a cup of coffee- I could talk about book for ages! But in the interest of brevity, I'd say if you like southern have you read These Is My Words by Nancy Turner?? AND the sequel is equally as good called Sarah's Quilt. With a name like that, it has to be good, right??!! I didn't realize that back in the day, the quilt frames were rigged up to the ceiling in the interest of saving space...hmmm, wonder what the hubs would think if I suggested this?!

I LOVE the Elm Creek Quilts series. I can't wait to read the Sonoma Rose. I am also very intrigued by The Hunger Games trilogy as I have heard a lot of good things about it!

if you liked Hunger Games and the Twilight series, you would probably like the Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices series!!

I loved the Hunger Games series. I read the first Twilight (mainly so I had a clue what my kid's friends' older siblings were talking about!).

I recently finished The Night Circus. It was fabulous--much better than I expected. Now I am reading Four Queens by Nancy Goldstone--nonfiction that reads like a novel.

Like Janet I loved The Secret Life of Bees. I have read the entire Elm Creek Quilts series. I happened to find it when she wrote the first one. It's one of the few books I buy and keep, never on my kindle. I recently read Pleating for Mercy and quite enjoyed it. I forget the author's first name, but her last name is Bourbon. She has a second one just out. It is to be a series and the first one was pretty good so I bought the second for my kindle. Haven't started it yet as I am finishing up Little Women. (never read it when I was young)

Hi Jennifer,
I don't know if you listen to any podcasts, but you might like Crafty Garden Mom. It is a combination quilting/book podcast. She is the book buyer for a large chain of shops located in various airports. She gets advance copies of books and reviews them and talks about what is upcoming. Her book reviews are excellent. She covers fiction, nonfiction, quilt, sewing books, a little bit of everything.

I love reading but how do you find the time? between the little buddies, sewing and working I just cant seem to find the time, I really miss it though, I always used to have my head in a book! Have you read any of Philippa Gregory's book, great stories about past kings and queens of England, historical, but slightly trashy, brilliant, cant put them down books. I really recommend

When do you fit the time in to read when you are always creating something wonderful and you have the two cutest kids that you hang out with all day! Yay for you!!!
I love a good book but find time lately only when I'm traveling!

Mary Kay Anderws and Dorothea Benton Frank are two of my favorite southern writers. I look forward to there new books every summer, they take me to the islands off the coast of Georgia and South Carolina.

You NEED to read Catching Fire ASAP! It's so good! It's my favorite out of the 3.

I love Jennifer Chiaverini's books. I'm reading the Lost Quilter right now. It is the story of Joanna in The Runaway Quilt, which is also my favorite in the series.
How do you get someone to send you a book. You are awesome.

Oh gosh! You NEED to get the 2nd and 3rd book right now!! You will love the series even more!

If you like quilting novels, try Prayers for Sale. It's a free book on Barnes and Noble. It's not just about quilts, more mining town but you can totally tell it's written by a quilter. It's understood better by a quilter too.

Oh, awesome!

The book sonoma rose is a sequel to the "lost quilter", I really loved it :-)
Have to pre-order the nook-edition.

I bought the Hunger games 24 months ago in Washington D.C., brought them to Germany with me, started to read them but stopped, re-imported them to the US when we moved here - now I gave them to my 10 year old son. I HAVE to read them before watching the movie... Should start soon.

Greetings,
Tina

I am not a big reader I have dyslexia and have a tought time, so when I ready a book it has to really GET me! Can I tell you It only took me two days to read each of the Hunger Games books! The movie is coming out in 36 days (17hours and five minutes) My ten year old son and I are sitting down each night and reading a chapter and then we talk about it! Oh, go get the other two books! They are also great fun!! (I could go on and on about these books!! LOL)

I am reading 'The Art of Fielding' at the moment and am utterly smitten with it. It is a debut which took the author 10 year to write and I think is quite a hit in the US at the moment.

Have you read Stephanie Meyers' The Host? It's a great story and science fiction based too. Ditto on Twilight, I have to pick up the Hunger Games at the library today. I just finished recently, "Bossypants" by Tina Fey, Tim Gunn's latest book and the memoir of Sandra from the Food Network which was very inspiring. I'm now reading "A rope and a prayer" about the NY Times journalist who was kidnapped by the taliban. It's written by his wife and himself. It's a book you really have to focus on because there is so much information, but definitely for people who are interested in the history and reality of the Middle East.

The Inkheart books are WONDERFUL!! Better written than the Twilight or Harry Potter in my opinion!! Don't go by the movie, if you saw it. The movie was awful!! I've read the Inkheart trilogy 3 times in the last two years: excellent mix of reality with fairy tale like story!! Try it, try it!!
