I Spy Charm Swap

Wow, so it's taking me a bit to get back into the swing of blogging and sewing. I really took Christmas vacation to heart but am looking forward to getting back into the swing of things.

So, what better way to jump back in than to do another charm swap? This time we are swapping novelty prints appropriate for an I Spy quilt. (BTW an I Spy quilt is one where you hunt for different pictures of things within the quilt.)

I think an I Spy quilt would be super fun for my kids, especially my little boy as he gets bigger but my stash is almost completely void of novelty prints.

I was totally inspired by my friend Courtney's awesome I Spy placemat below.

How fabulous and fun is that? I love all of those adorable little pictures, and I would love to make one of those too.

So, here's the deal.

1. We are swapping 5" charm squares.  You will purchase 1 yard of fabric and cut it  into 5" charm squares. 1 yard = 56 charms.
(I recommend buying 1.25 yards- never hurts to have a little extra in case you make a cutting mistake.)

2. Choose a fabric that has a small print suitable for an I Spy quilt. Scale of the print is very important as smaller works better in this case. A lot of Japanese fabric has great small prints that shout I Spy to me.

3. Fabric must be designer label, 100% cotton, quilt shop quality fabric.
No Hancocks, Joanns or Michael's fabrics.

4. Fabric must be new and unwashed and must come from a smoke free environment.

5. Before sending your fabric to me, cut your fabric into 5" x 5" charm squares.

Press your fabric before cutting.  You may want to purchase a slight overage in case you make mistakes cutting your charms.
1 yard = 56 charm squares (5" x 5".)

Here's a great tutorial on how to cut fabric into charms by Elizabeth Hartman.

6.  Put your fabric in a ziplock bag and include a 3x5 index card with your name and email address.

7. In your envelope please include:
  • the charms in ziplock,
  • the index card
  • a PREPAID SELF ADDRESSED STAMPED ENVELOPE for me to mail your charms back to you! This is very important! If you do not send a SASE with your charms, I won't be able to mail them back to you. After all the effort you are taking to participate, you would hate for that to happen!
8. Finally, upload a picture of your chosen fabric ASAP to the ELQ I Spy Charm Swap Flickr group. This is really important so we don't have any duplicates! Also, include all pertinent info about your fabric (designer, name, color, shop) so everyone can have access to order more if they want.

Within the Flickr group, feel free to share ideas on projects, quilt layouts, and plans for your I Spy charms.

This swap will be open to 55 others (56 including me) and will also have some alternates just in case. (Sorry to my friends oversees and up north, this swap is open to US residents only.)

Deadlines:
Your charms need to be in my hands by February 10! I will email everyone my mailing address once the spots are all filled.

There are some great options for I Spy fabrics out there. Here are a few to get you inspired:
From Fabricworm:

From Sew Fresh Fabrics:

From the Fat Quarter Shop:

Now, please note that we want to keep this a bit more sophisticated and fun but no licensed prints please (no Dora, Barbie, Sponge Bob, sports teams etc.)

So are you all jazzed and ready to go? Want to sign up?
Simply fill out this form (below)and you'll be registered. I will email all the participants once the slots are filled.

After you sign up, grab a button for your blog, pop on over to the ELQ I SPY Charm Swap group and join us!

In honor of my semi-commitment to try to reduce some stash, I think I'm sitting this one out...but that is a FABULOUS swap button!

I super LOVE the sample prints you have. I did an i-spy swap before and was less than happy with the result....hoping your samples inspire lots of fun stuff, I'm thinking I'll give it a try!

The place mat is awesome.

I was just thinking TODAY that I'd better make an i-spy quilt before my kids are too old!

Perfect timing:)

I want in. I love I Spy quilts! This sounds like a much easier swap than I have participated in before. (Just one fabric instead of 10 different ones.). Thanks for hosting the fun!!!!!

I was wondering if it would be possible to send in 2 sets and get 2 sets back? I'd like to do them for my grands.

I was bummed that this swap was full, but thanks to you letting us know about Lorelei's swap (Midnight Maker), I'm now taking up 2 spots in that swap!
Thanks for the inspiration to start another project (or 2)!
