I've been pinning like a mad woman and sketching ideas like crazy.
Seems my ideas are a bit grandiose for starting out but I'll get there.
I'm happy with these and really like this happy little house. Looks cozy to me.
I drew up both patterns myself- had to be stubborn about it- but I like the results.
I've printed three more templates I want to try- all very different from each other. One of which is this adorable girl my friend Katy designed. How cute is she?
Here's what I've learned the past two days:
Paper piecing is when you use freezer paper and add a quarter seam. (Hello Add-a-Quarter ruler- this thing rocks!)
Foundation piecing is when you sew through the paper. (Add-a-Quarter ruler rocks here too.) The Quilty videos I posted the other day are examples of this.
This whole process takes a while.
The fabric you choose makes a big difference! Note to self- get some text fabric!
If you have a hard time with fabric waste and can't stand to have lots of tiny scraps to throw away, paper piecing, rather than foundation piecing is for you.
Did you already know this already? It's all new to me.
So what do you think? Want to make the little house? I'll have the template/pattern for you this week.
I also made up a few mug rugs... love the blanket stitch applique- great for small pieces of fabric.
All three of these mug rugs are listed in my Etsy shop.
I have lots of things in the works this week... an improv tutorial is headed your way and a 12 Days of Christmas block too. And one day soon I will have the sewing machine cover tutorial for you too. Whew!
Today is a beautiful day- cold and crisp and bright Carolina blue skies. Looking forward to spending time with my family. What are you up to today?

I just realized all these years I have been doing foundation paper piecing and not paper piecing. Now I know how all those talents like Ayumi and Kerry and now you get the print on the fabric to to look straight of grain. Everything looks great!
I didn't know the difference either, very informative. Love all those beautiful blocks!
wow, your paper piecing work looks fantastic! I would like to give it a try someday, but it looks very intimidating. ;0
I love love love your house block and the fabrics you chose look awesome together!
I'm with Diane! All along(all 2 attempts!!) I thought I was paper piecing, only to discover I was foundation piecing! I do have the add a quarter inch ruler though, and can't live without it. your blocks are amazing. Great work.
You did a great job!!
Oh my gosh... those are sooooo stinkin cute... Love em! I recently got hooked on paper-piecing, too. So much fun!
I found tiny blocks and put them on cards... made christmas cards for our troops!
I really love your mug/tea cup block. It looks fantastic! Thanks for talking about the differences in the two techniques. I like the idea of paper piecing, but I'm definitely one of those who couldn't stand the amount of scraps being tossed during foundation piecing. I can't wait for your template! :)
I've not yet tried either kind of piecing. One day ....
Oh, those mug rugs are so cute. Love the tree and present.
I am busy working on some needle books.
Hmmm, I went down to Charlotte this morning so the boys could visit with DH's grandmother. Planning to work on some binding tonight for my first commissioned quilt! Still no PP or foundation piecing going on over here!
Such fantastic things you are making! I'm so impressed with your paper piecing! I totally just cut & wing anything I make like that. Can't imagine cutting out all those little pieces of paper and getting it so exact. Glad someone is getting some use out of the 1/4" ruler. I'm sure you'll sell those sweet mug rugs fast!
I didn't know the difference between paper-piecing and foundation-piecing! I've just been calling it all paper-piecing! Thanks for clarifying. : ) Under these definitions, I think I'll stick with foundation piecing! All your piecing look great.
Yay, your blocks look fab! (and I didn't know the difference between foundation and regular paper piecing either, I just sketched and went with the first tutorial I found when googling paper piecing lol)
Love those wee mug rugs too, fab way to use up scraps
These look great! I really need to try paper piecing - some of the cutest and most original blocks i've seen are paper pieced. I didn't know there was a diff. between paper and foundation piecing..
I have to say that you are crazy, some of the pieces for the house are so tiny! How do you stitch those in? Please tell me the camera is deceiving me and those pieces are a little bitter than a finger nail? If not, how the heck do you sew those in? Ha, very nice though! :)
Thanks so much for sharing the difference between paper piecing and foundation piecing because I was quite confused with that. I'm going to try using the paper piecing method one of these days. Maybe make a simple little mug or pot holder and try it. Needs to be simple since I've never done it before. Ha! :)
Thanks for the share!!!
Very cute, Jennifer! I love the brightness of your house block! We took a weekend trip to Cincinnati, mainly to visit Ikea and hopefully find something fun to organize all my fabric scraps. If I'm going to keep up with this paper-piecing rage I've got to stay organized! Hope you are having a great weekend with your family!
All of these are adorable!!!! Well done! :) Going to make my way through all your great info (video) this evening when I have some time, but wanted to say how much I like this post. And those little trees....sigh.... Love the fabric in the house you made. :)
Hugs!
These are so adorable! The house with the yellow windows makes me feel like the lights are on, so welcoming. I love that you'd jumped right in and are making your own now!
These are so cute Jennifer! I need to do some more work to figure out paper piecing! Sorry I haven't been by for a while - life is so busy at the moment!
I'm promising myself to try this in the new year! I love your house, so cute! I like your fabric choices :)
Oh my gosh, I have been a foundation piece freak lately...my 'copied/own/quadrille' paper attempt from the weekend did not go all that well. It seems far easier than it is, these designs. Your paper pieced designs look great!
You've been busy, busy! Your teacup and house are wonderful. And it sounds like you'll be even busier for the rest of the year. But if you're like me, you wouldn't change it a bit!
Thank you! I can use the cup-pattern for christmas ☺
