My sweet hubs has asked my preference on a Nook or a Kindle. I believe Santa is taking notes.
I love to read- don't do it often enough-but I'm jazzed about possibly getting an eReader!
So here's where I need your help... I am not sure which one to get.
Do you have a preference? Kindle? Nook? I'm almost certain I want the more basic black and white version.
We are most likely getting an iPad as a family too so can we share books with an app on that too?
I'd love to know your thoughts.
BTW, anybody else super psyched about Twilight: Breaking Dawn? I AM!
xo,
Jennifer

I have a nook and love it. I'm a huge reader, 100-150 books a year; it's very convenient, especially for travel. I stuck with the B&W, too. I like that if there's ever a problem I can go to my nearest B&N, and they'll take care of it, or help me with it. The stores also have nook classes, usually every Saturday.
If you have to share the iPad, don't plan on downloading and reading a book, unless you are home alone all day or all night. You will be lucky to read a few blogs.
i have a kindle and i love it. AND i can get library books on it now.
I have a kindle and I LOVE it. I've never had a problem and I suspect that amazon has a bigger collection of downloadables than B&N does. Plus you can download audio books from Audible.com onto the kindle. I share my kindle books with my Android phone; I'm sure there's an i-app for kindle too. I'm not savvy enough to read my blogs on the kindle but I like seeing the photos on my big laptop screen anyway, so it all works out!
I love my Nook. When I went to pick it out I was really waffling between it and the Kindle. Ultimately, the feature that sold me on the Nook was it's ability to read library books. You can't (or at least couldn't as of last Dec.) check e-books out of the library and read them on your Kindle. Barnes & Noble has a great book selection and the Nook is very easy to use. :)
I am utterly adoring of my Kindle. I got the version with 3G as I travel overseas a fair bit, which has been worth every penny. No more hauling 1000-pg books around... I think Kindles now also allow library book-reading, too. Colour is unnecessary. The battery life on the Kindle is awesome - with heavy reading, I get 3 weeks before having to charge. Plus the Amazon cover with the battery light built in has been excellent - it hardly alters the battery life, and is great for travel/camping/reading in bed.
I like the look of the new kindle and I do like color and the fact that you can read and go online with it and the cost is lower than the ipad. But I love macs and an ipad is something I might like in the future.

I love my basic b/w Kindle reader. One thing I really like is Amazon's customer service. When my original Kindle had a problem with the keyboard letters rubbing off, the customer service guys jumped right in. I talked to a real person (located in the US) on the phone and he ran me right through what to do. A new Kindle arrived in 2 days with a postage paid box to send back the old one. The directions for transferring my books to the new device were clear and easy. In no time at all, I was up and running again. I love Amazon when it comes to customer service. I have no experience with the Nook people though I'm sure their e-reader is probably pretty good.
I've had a basic Kindle since Mother's Day. I don't use it as much as I think I should. I had no preference, but my husband researched them and ended buying the Kindle for me. I trust his judgment!
And, yes!!!!! Super excited for Breaking Dawn Part I!!!!!!!!
I have the color nook and love it for reading in bed at night because it is backlit. I can adjust the brightness way down at night and then increase it for reading it daylight.
Oh heck yeah I'm excited about Twilight: Breaking Dawn! Are ya crazy? HA! I'm not going on the day it comes out though, that would be crazy! I think the hubby and I are going to go on a "week day" when kids are in school. lol
Kindle. Kindle Fire has the ability to play videos/movies and stream tv shows. It also offers unlimited "cloud" storage and there are more apps available. If you only want it to read books on then probably either one is fine. I still love holding that paper book in my hands when I read.
I have a color Nook. It's a perfect way to get all my quilt magazines, and books. Now with all the great apps they have, it's perfect to travel with. Games, email, note pads. I even store my photos on it. Everyone has their own needs though, and there are choices for all!
I seriously love my Kindle! Got it for Christmas last year. I get eye strain really easily and I've had no problems with the screen whatsoever. I'd love to get my hands on both that new touch screen version (only $99!!) as well as the Fire but since the one I have does everything I need it to, I'll be sticking with it for a while to come. Battery life is great!
I have a kindle. My daughter has a Nook.We both love our readers. LOL. If you ONLY want to read (like me) the Kindle is awesome. The one thing hers has that I wish mine had (I got mine last December, so consider the newer ones may have this) is the page numbers. I know it is a little thing, but I miss it.LOL. Either way I think they are great devices..
I use my iPad as my e-reader. There is a Kindle app for the iPad, so you can download and read all the Kindle books right on your iPad. So you may not even need an e-reader!
I wish I read more, but you know, I have this quilting and blogging thing I do ... LOL
Kindle all the Way!!! I got mine last xmas and LOVE it. I also LOVE the feel, smell and weight of books so was in no way interested in color so the kindle was my way at having a little bit of technology witout loosing the look of a book (if you know what I mean). I would also recommend the cover with the light .... well worth the investment in my book! I/we love MY kindle so much that I am getting hubby one of his own for his birthday next week.
Now to Twilight ....... I did a movie marathon on the weekend just to refresh myself and have all the books on my KINDLE!!! Double win there :o)
Hi,
if you have a kindle, you can only buy amazon books (without a lot of work and anger), if you have a nook, you can buy your books anywhere and read them on the nook.
I have a nook color, and i really love it, because I can read magazines on it, too. And I don't have to switch on additional light.
my husband switched from nook first generation do the newest one last week and he is quite impressed of it.
And if you have WIFI, it is astonishing how fast you can buy and read a book (you even get free samples of most books, so you can decide after the first chapter(s) wether is worth buying it or not.
You will love it, I'am sure!
Greetings,
Tina
What is a 'nook'???? (from someone whose surname is very similar to that!!!!) So I am no help to you! ANd we don't have nooks in Australia!!
I love my kindle! But I haven't tried any others. I know you can get the kindle app for iPad. My husband has it on his phone (android) too so we share accounts. I love that I can get a free sample, read the first couple of chapters and then decide if I want it. And I've caught up on all the classics I should have read in high school because they were free and loved them!!
Hey, Your blog looks great! I LOVE yellow!
My girls have Kindles and they are amazing! Absolutely a good spend on our part. I have an iPad and have the Kindle reader on it and do most of my reading on it these days. Love it! Would highly recommend both Kindle and iPad.
A new kindle would be on my list, if it wasn't already full of FMF fund 'contributions'!
I just got a Kindle for my birthday and I absolutely love it. I used to think that only 'real' books would do but now that I have the Kindle I wouldn't get rid of it for anything in the world. It's so light and really comfortable to hold and read (especially in bed). I've never held a Nook so don't know how they compare.
Ever since I have a Kindl, I have started reading again.
I first had a Nook, when visiting the States. But then I discovered that you couldn't download books outside the States, so I brought it back really fast.
If you buy an eBook at Amazon, you can share a title for 2 weeks with someone else. A bit short, I think.
For me the only disadvantage the Kindl has, is that I can't download Dutch books on it. I would need a sony eReader for that.
Good luck with choosing (o:
twilight?? oh yes!!! I can't wait to go to the cinema to see it!!! but i'm worried that noone from my mates will go with me.. and I reall really don't want to go alone xd
eReader?? i have no idea what you are talking about.. xd but i like the quotation!! I'm always soo sooo sad when I finish a book.. miss everything a minute after I finish a book! ;p
I love my nook. So kindle has his own sofware and with my nook I can also read the ebooks of our libory.
~Heike
Kindle all the way. My family have them and they are awesome. Plus you can make some cute cases for them... ;-)
I'm literally squeeee-ing about breaking dawn. Such a geek...!
I have a Kindle and I love it. You can get library books on them now in many places. (even here in little Chapel Hill) I love the black and white. Not hard on the eyes like a glowing computer screen can be. And yes, mine has a quilted cover.
Love, love, love the kindle. We're living overseas for a couple of years (military) and I have been able to download books all over Europe while travelling...instantly & without any extra fee. The guy at B&N we talked to wasn't sure if we could do this with a Nook. Kindle service is fantastic and I think Amazon is in better fiscal shape than B&N right now. I haven't tried sharing e-books yet, but will soon - I've been told you can do this on the Kindle. Amazon also has a lot of book reviews and sales. If you travel a lot, I definitely recommend the Kindle 3G.
I have a kindle as there is no way to buy English language books and LOVE it. I read way more than I used to, downloads take nano seconds and I understand customer care is second to none. I love the fact that you can highlight passages, share books blah blah blah. I don`t know anything about a Nook so can`t help you there but I know the kindle is fab!!
I was asking my friends the same question in March. I ended up with the iPad. Besides using it as an ereader, I read all my favorite blogs from it, I do my banking, read emails....it is awesome.
I have the original Kindle - I loved it. But then I got an iPod touch. Yes it is small, but I have no problems reading the Kindle app on it. THEN this year, I got a iPad for my birthday (wow- what an amazing present!) I LOVE reading my kindle books on it.
I can't comment on the Nook, because I have never used it. However, a simple (cheap) clip on book light worked just fine with my original Kindle.
I have an older model Kindle. I love it. Know that no matter what you get one with more features will be out soon thereafter. This technology is still growing.
I have a Nook and I love it. One thing I think it fabulous is the size. I have a black and white model, and it's very compact, but still very easy to read.
I'm going at midnight for Breaking Dawn. It's going to be awesome.
I <3 my standard old-school Kindle, and I am sure the Nook is great too. One thing to think about when you are considering an iPad (other then price) is that the iPad screen is LCD, which means that it causes more eye strain than the Kindle's e-ink screen, which is much easier on your eyes. I would get an iPad for web browsing and games, but I wouldn't use it for heavy reading for that reason.
I have a Nook that I adore. I have not had any iPad or Kindle experience, so I do not know how they compare.
Kindle, no question. I am on my second one and I love it.
I have a Kindle and I love it!!! My husband and my mother-in-law each have one as well and they love them too! Not sure about Nook, I've never used one...
My dh and I both have Kindles and love them. I'd suggest holding both of them if you can before you decide. Do you know someone with a kindle so you can see it in person? You can see the nook at the barnes and noble store. I did that before I got mine and decided the kindle was what I wanted. I like the long battery life (about 2 weeks or so) that you get when you don't have all the extras. I like being able to read outside and to take 6 books on vacation without having to carry all that weight.
Good luck deciding! I know you'll love whichever one you get.
Kindle...but that's probably because my local library offers FREE kindle downloads. I can get 5 at once, and keep them for 2 weeks at a time. It's wonderful!
My husband has a Kindle and loves it - even more now that he can download books from the library!
I have the Nook, black and white version. I love being able to get all of the free download books that are available through Barnes and Noble.. LOTS of Romance etc. I also get many books that I put prepaid Barnes and Noble cards on there from my local grocery store to keep on the account in case I want to purchase another book. I get the prepaid cards for my mom as a gift so she can read her books. She loves hers as she can make the text nice and big so that she can see the words easily (her vision isn't great anymore) No books lying around the house to take to the re-sale store. Also you can share them with a friend many of the purchased books, and they come right back to your nook.. Havn't figured that part out yet cuz I don't know too many who own the nook, but still worth it.
I love my Kindle, but there is a new Kindle coming out Nov 15 that has wifi and you can surf the net, download movies from Amazon and watch them and get email. It is not as versatile as the iPad but it seems pretty neat and at 199 samolas it is less than the 499 cheapest iPad which my brother in law dearly loves and reads his books on. I know nothing about the Nook.
Kindle! We have the last generation Kindle and love it. No problems at all and very easy to read.
The just came out with the newest generation with a touch pad!
I was resistant to the e-reader but my husband knew I would love it. He was 100% correct! I have a kindle and couldn't be happier with it or Amazon's amazing customer service.
Once I surrendered my initial reluctance (I love the feel of reading a good book, turning the pages...), I became a Kindle-lover. I've not abandoned hardcopy books (not by a long shot), but I do love the portability, readability and sheer convenience of the Kindle.
It may not matter to you, but when I was looking into e-readers, I focused on the Kindle until I realized that it wouldn't allow me to read any google books on it. Then I looked into the iPad, and I'm glad I went that route, because I can read books in three or four different apps, including things such as a library of British Classics (a free app, I believe, so poof! a whole little instant library on your device!). The google books matter to me because these are free and I'm a historian -- so I need access to that sort of old, out of copyright books that maybe no one else wants to read. I didn't look at the Nook because I'd heard about it having battery issues, but this may be something that is a non-issue these days.
Good luck, whichever you decide! :)
I am pretty sure that now you can check out ebooks from the library on your Kindle, in response to the earlier comment from someone else, so the nook and kindle are now on equal playing ground as far as that goes. I have been trying to make the same decision, but think I want a Kindle Fire for Christmas. I love amazon, and everything in association with that company!
P.S. Can not wait for the latest installment of Twilight. I didn't care for the 4th book, but can't wait to see how they adapt it to screen! Squeal!
Oh, and you can read Kindle books on your iPad, too. It's another free app. :)
Kindle! I haven't seen a nook and I don't own a Kindle but the first time I handled one I was completely converted. So much so I have been hard selling them to everyone I know. I will be leaving santa lots of hints re kindles. Especially now there is an £89 smaller version here in the UK. Yes you can read kindle stuff on Ipads, phones and pc's as well as Kindles. However, Ipads don't have that screen that allows you to read your book outside in the sunshine without a lot of nasty glare. I was amazed at how easy to read a Kindle outside on a very sunny day when a friend first showed me one!
I'm absolutely no help on the e-reader, but can't wait to see the new Twilight movie! I don't hardly ever go to the movies, but have seen the first three in theaters (probably the only movies I've seen in theaters is the past 4 years!), and plan to see this one too. Can't wait!
I also want to see Footloose. ;)
Sorry only have an ipad but love to read on it, using it way too many hours of the day reading quilting blogs
Am so excited about Twilight!
My mom found off-brand Nooks for us last year at Christmas. I'm not sure that I'm any help in the Nook vs Kindle debate, because I'm not sure which I'd buy if I was getting another one. But I will say that if you live near a Barnes and Noble, you can go read on your Nook in the store for free. Also, having a light-up screen is big for me, but I'm not sure if you can get that on a black and white one. (Mine does have color and I can tell you, it really isn't that great.)
Kindle! I think the menu is easier to figure out. They both have a lot of the same features so really it's a personal preference (I think). I wouldn't do the new kindle that is backlit because then you don't get the e-ink, which to me is the point of an e-reader! Again, personal preference though!
At our house we have a first gen Kindle (mine) and a second gen Kindle (hubby's), and I'm hoping for a Kindle Fire for Christmas! We love our Kindles - Amazon has a fabulous selection of books, many of which you can get for free - we have over 3000 books in our collection. You also can loan out some titles now to other Kindle owners, which is a nice feature that I was missing from "hard copy" books. My hubby won't even hardly read a real book any more - he says they are too heavy! I'm looking forward to getting the Kindle Fire, though - it seems like it will have all the benefits of an iPad, without the high cost ($199 vs. $499+) plus it's backlit, so I can read in bed even if hubby wants to go to sleep!
Good luck choosing - and be sure to tell us which way you go!
PS - you can download the Kindle app to almost any electronic device these days - I have it on my iPad Touch and use it to read in bed at night now. My niece has it on her computer so that she can borrow books from me!
I have the nook color and really love it and use it all the time. However if I had an ipad that I had to share then I would go with the Kindle. I love the web searching on the nook but I do so much of that by battery does not seem to last as long.
I have a Kindle and I love it but if I were to buy another e-reader I would get the Kobo reader (we don't have Nooks here in Canada.) Kobo's selection is much, much bigger than Amazon's (in Canada at least) and my library has ebooks that work on the Kobo but not on the Kindle. With the Kindle you are limited to books sold in the Amazon store because the reader uses a non-standard format (conversely you can only read ebooks from Amazon on a Kindle.) If you are technically savvy you can get around these restrictions but it's not very easy. There are iPad apps for the Kobo, Kindle and Nook so regardless of which one you get you will be able to sync to your iPad. iPads are heavy, though -- I really dislike using it as an e-reader.
I have a Nook Color and LOVE it! My one big draw was teh backlight as I wanted to read in bed without disturbing my hubby and I wanted to read while we travel at night and it has worked beautifully. I loathe book lights otherwise as I've always had battery issues w/ them and they're cumbersome. But, that's just me. You can loan books to other Nook readers, you can get them from your library, they offer free books, etc. You can play online (Angry Birds anyone??!!!) and B&N has some special features that others don't have (like being able to read any book free at B&N stores, some gaming features while in-store, sample chapters of books, etc). I'm sure the Kindle is fabulous also. I have a Kindle app on our iPad, computer, etc where I can download those books. It really depends on what you want. For me, the backlight was the big seller on the Nook as far as the other featuers, they were about equal in my opinion...
mycolor nook is a.o.k.! plus theres a teeny tiny memory card that i've loaded my favorite knitting and crochet patterns on. much easier to use while crafting on the go or even at home.
I've read that Kindle is the only way to go, plus it's the only one that you can read outside. I'm hoping Santa brings me one for Christmas.
and WOO HOO for Breaking Dawn!!
My hubby gave me a basic Nook last year for my big birthday (5-0). I love it! I still love holding physical books though, but love that I can carry my Nook in my purse and not worry about pages being bent or torn.
I am so glad you asked this question. My loved ones have been asking me which one I want and I couldn't decide. Well this statement "if you have a kindle, you can only buy amazon books (without a lot of work and anger), if you have a nook, you can buy your books anywhere and read them on the nook." was my deciding factor. I want a Nook.
If I were going for one, I'd get the new kindle, but that's mostly because I like the fact that it's not just an ereader. Also if you get the kindle you can have the kindle app on your ipad so you can have the same book on both devices. I do all my reading on my ipod touch and I've tried using the housband's ipad but I find it a little too heavy and awkward to use one handed, which is how I like to read. So I'd definitely recommend trying both out in person for the ergonomics. Have fun!
I have a Nook and I barely get time to read on it because my mom uses it. I couldn't decide last year, but I went with the Nook because I could get books from the library on it and you couldnt with Kindle.
My sister also loves her Nook. I bought mine and hers during Black Friday last year and got a great price. I wondered if it would be awkward reading, but I actually love using the e-reader. My Nook also has a wifi and games.
I love my Kindle! The only problem is the screen isn't lit. So now I want a Kindle Fire! I even read my Bible on my Kindle. So much easier to take on trips.
I have a Kindle, which I love, but then you can't get Nooks here! I think that's a telling starting point for me, that Kindles, or the Sony readers, have the option of a much larger library of books available, plus when I see reviews online for books I tend to see Kindle availability listed first when they're talking about e-Book options. The best thing about it though is that it ISN'T backlit, so it doesn't strain your eyes in the way that electronic devices usually tend to do. I have to say I only use it for travel though, in the house, nothing beats the good old paper version :o)
Kindle!! But Santa can spend a bit more and buy you a wi-fi i-pad, which does so much more! If you really just want an e-reader - the Kindle is the way to go. Amazon has a much bigger book list than B&N (and will probably be in business longer). But if you want to surf the net and blog and take photos, spring for an i-pad! Signed, jaded toward ipad. :0) Lily.
I have an ipad, which I love and wouldn't trade for anything! But I'm thinking I need a kindle too. They're not that much $ and the screen is just amazing how it looks like a book. I read somewhere that it is just like a book in that staring at that screen will not keep you awake at night like looking at a computer screen will. Thought that was pretty cool as I am usually reading before bed & was hesitant to buy an ereader because of that.
Totally nook color- I am using mine now to leave this comment. I love reading with it too and have read more books with my nook than I normally would. Love it!
I'm an iPad user all the way. You have iBooks, kindle and nook readers all in one and you can surf the Internet, check your email, blog, tweet, Facebook, watch movie, listen to music.......it's endless. I say iPad but you won't want to share! Lol hope this helps.
Sounds like you're going to be going with what price are you happy with. They all do so much. Good Luck. Don't have either in my house yet, Dear Santa...
Twilight, I knew I liked your blog not only for quilting! Can hardly wait!
We have an ipad and that's enough for me but I know you might need both. The ipad does have so many great classics available for free my kids have been reading Sherlock Holmes and the Beezes books.
I am sooooo excited for the movie!! They always come out right around my Birthday so it's a great treat!!
Hubby bought me an ipad2 for my bday and I love it. I can read my favorite blogs in bed! I am buying my mom a kindle fire for her bday/xmas gift...it looks really cool. Still love the ipad though. Just can't afford to gift it.
Check out the kindle fire if that is in your price range.
And twilight...loved the books and am interested in seeing how they work this last book. The acting makes me laugh some times (sorry if you are a huge fan), but I'm stuck with this until the end. Should be interesting....
NOOK! Any issues or questions you just have to pop into a Barnes and Noble and they are a great help. I have had mine for a while in the beginning there would be updates to download, which I liked, you always felt like you still had the latest model, until they came out with the color model. Plus every Friday, they have free downloads. Either the Kindle or the Nook they are both so similar, where do you typically order your books Amazon or B&N? That will influence your choice.
I have the Nook and received it as a gift when they first came out. Hubby decided he wanted one a year later. I like that it does not have keys on the bottom of the reader. I feel I would unintentionally hit them while reading. The new black and white nook has a great screen size and is easy to use.
I have the black and white Nook classic and love it. I have friends with the B&W Kindle and its very similar in feel to the Nook. The deciding factor for me was having a Barnes and Noble down the street that I could go to for questions, free downloads, classes, etc. I also like the touchscreen at the bottom of the Nook instead of the keyboard on the Kindle. I'm a touchscreen kinda girl! :-)
I bought a Kindle this year and really like it. There are plenty of free books on Amazon and I can now get kindle books via the local library.
If you have a Staples Office store nearby, you can see and buy the Kindle.
The battery life (3 weeks if not connected to the wireless) is wonderful> I also like the screen which is nonglare. I agree with previous comments to get the cover that also has the light since it helps as you keep on reading as the sun goes down!
Liz
I've had a Nook for over a year & would buy it again. Both are really good especially since Kindle has added loaning & downloading from the library (features the Nook shipped with). The features that Nook has over the Kindle is a replaceable battery, expandable memory & availability of books. If your battery dies you can just go into your local B&N and get one for free. Kindle's batter is not replaceable, if it dies it's dead. The nook has an SD card slot so the memory can be increased, kindle's cannot. Lastly, the kindle can only read books dowloaded from Amazon. Nooks can read books from B&N, project guttenberg, google books, etc. Basically any book can be formatted to be read on a Nook. Good luck picking & enjoy reading!
My hubbie has a kindle, I have an iPad with the Kindle app on it (amongst others). You can sync both to the same account on Amazon. You can use a free program called Calibre to convert ebook formats and of course there is Project Guttenberg with thousands of free books that you can add to the Kindle via your PC. Amazon also has thousands of free books, plus even more very cheap books by independent authors (see the Kindle forums on Amazon to find out more).
B&N has the largest e-book selection. I had a Nook until I got my iPad. I recommend just getting an iPad and you can use iBooks, Nook & Kindle.
I couldn't agree more with that quote. I lose myself so much in books that I tune out everything around me. I love love LOVE my Nook Color... B&N has a great selection of e-books!
I am ridiculously excited for Twilight... it's embarrassing how many timesI've read the books and seen the movies!
Oh Jennifer - you need an iPod and with books downloaded from the library or lots of other sites to listen to while you quilt. It is like having someone read you a bedtime story. My two favorite things - a good book and my quilting!
"You can only use books bought from Amazon on a Kindle"
Sorry folks, but this is plain wrong. Kindles use a .mobi file, also any .pdf file. There are plenty of books sold that come in these formats, often from the author's websites (rather nice to actually pay your favourite authors all of the price of their books rather than them getting only 10% of the sticker price!). I have a ton of pdf articles on mine...
Someone said you can't buy a Nook in Canada. Not true. You can buy one in Saskatchewan, at least.
I don't an opinion of value to offer. I'm mostly scoping the comments to help me decide which reader to get. I found the comments about the screen particularly interesting. I was leaning towards and iPad but because I read every night before I go to sleep, perhaps a more specific "reader" would be a better screen for me.
Hmmmm ... I'm leaning toward BOTH Kindle and iPad. And yet I love just a plain, ordinary, physical book most of all. Hmmmm ...
My husband has Kindle, I have IPad. I use the Kindle App. (there are other book apps too). We can read the same books via our amazon account. Gutenberg project allows you access to many out of print books. Good luck sharing the IPad! We never use our desk top or lap top anymore.
