I finished the free motion quilting of the scrap happy quilt.
And it is NO WHERE near perfect but I am actually really proud of myself for finishing it, especially considering the trouble I had.
I kinda can't wait to get the binding on and wash it so I can see how the FMQ will turn out then.
You can see where I got stuck and loopy-looped my way out - oh well!
This is my learning curve quilt for sure.
It ought to be perfect for hauling outside, taking to the park, sitting on the grass, throwing in the car, and I won't care one bit if it gets mud, juice or anything else spilled on it.
It certainly won't be an heirloom but I think I will enjoy looking back on it in the future (when I get better at FMQ) and seeing how far I've come.
Thanks again for all of your great suggestions, help and support! Even after all the struggles, I actually like FMQ and want to keep on... plus the only way I am going to get better is to keep practicing.

| Kinda a crazy FMQ mess but what can you do? :) |
Hopefully I will get this bound and washed soon but we have company this weekend so it will probably have to wait until next week.
Hope you have a fabulous weekend and a happy Halloween!

Thanks for showing your quilting! It looks a lot like mine! LOL! You encourage me to keep going!
Wonderful quilt! Great job on the machine quilting also. Something I have learned about machine quilting is that if I use a back that is "busy", my not so perfect stitches are nearly invisible.
Your quilt is mint! Well done to you for kicking it's butt :D
Your beautiful quilt may not end up in some museum hanging on the wall but it will be loved and treasured and eventually... a family heirloom!
Congratulations on a fantastic finish and on not letting the FMQ get you to give up!
Good for you! It looks great! Have a good weekend!
Your quilt looks great!!
I think you did a good job. I'm glad to hear that you are back to FMQ with no problems! :)
Yay, glad you conquered it in the end :o)
Great job!
So glad you got it all sorted, and now you can use it and be happy again xxx
YEAH!!! good job!
This looks like a perfect picnic blanket -- I love the happy front! :)
Well done! Glad you showed it who was boss! Have a great weekend!
Practice makes perfect and I need a lot of practice myself. Your back stitches look great. Much better than mine.
Wow! There is certainly progress! Congratualtions. Show us a picture after you washed the quilt!
Happy weekend!
I love yOur honesty with FMQ! And I bet it becomes your familes favorite quilt!
The quilt is great. So what if it is not perfect, it is still beautiful and will be used which is what every quilt should be - used and loved. Well done on getting it finished!
The FMQ looks great!! Inspires me to give it a go on a future project!
It looks alot better then my first FMQ so pat yourself and the back and on to the next one. Congratulations for forging on and finishing.
I think it looks wonderful! Your stitch lengths are pretty dang consistently spaced, which is my biggest problem with fmq. No doubt you'll just get better and better, what with this good of a start!
Thanks for sharing the bumpy road to getting it done!
Good Job!! My first quilt gets thrown on the back of the settee, Sam likes to lay on it, it goes out with us when we go for a picnic, first we use it to put between the loungers in the back of the car so they don't rattle around and then it gets thrown on the grass to sort the food out (and for Sam to lay on) it gets used such a lot....which is exactly what I wanted it for. I hope you have as much fun with yours. x
Hooray! It looks awesome!!!
Yeah, you won and beat the machine! I do it when I have to and usually end up just loving my long-arm folks all the more!
Who cares about the FMQ... the top is flipping gorgeous! I LOVE it. We are our own worst critic... I think you did a wonderful job :)
Yay Jennifer! Your perseverance has paid off - it looks great!
Woohoo! Thanks for sharing your journey with this! It makes me want to give it a go. It's been ages since I gave myself time to try something new - quicker and more reassuring to stick what what you know. Might have to give myself a week over the holidays to be allowed to make mistakes and get better. Thanks!
We love you all the more Jennifer because it`s not perfect but my favourite quilt is the one with all the imperfections, which I learn from and make me a better sewist. Kudos to you for sticking it out!
I am so proud of you for your perseverance!!!!! Take the "lessons learned" and apply them to the next...
Yay for you!
It turned out beautifully! Seriously! I can't wait to see it bound and crinkly. And yes, you will be so proud to have it around to encourage you to keep growing!
Nice job! I also keep telling myself I will get better with practice and I now like to try new designs. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for sharing! It's so encouraging to see your FMQ.
Awesome job! I'm in the same boat, I need to keep practicing to get better almost like piano lessons 20mins a day kind of thing but finding the time is the hard part bleh!
Woo-hoo! Yay! Three hearty cheers! Good on you! Fantastic!
Just keep on practicing and it will finally come to you. Get a pad of paper and a pencil and draw it out while you watch tv or talk on the phone or when ever you just have time to sit and do nothing. It will help in the long run.
Yay!! You did it, you did it!
And a beautiful job you did!! :o)
Your FMQ looks a lot like mine when I started. Okay, even after I'd be at it a while. I use thread color on the back to match the back so it doesn't show up so much. When I wash the quilt, it looks good- like magic, somehow. I don't like it when people tell me my FMQ looks great when it clearly doesn't! I am getting better and you're right- it's just practice, practice, practice! You will continue to show improvement too!
Keep at it! My first tries looked like... blech! I practiced on a vintage sheet quilt first so I wouldn't feel bad about messing up pretty fabric!
Way to go!!!!
Thank you for sharing your process...it gives me hope that mine will (eventually) get to this stage, too.
It will be a good quilt for all the things you mentioned...and I promise that you will get better at it.
Make some "practice pads" with cheap (or ugly) fabric to practice on. You will be surprised at the difference you will see after a bit.
Congratulations for sticking with it until success was achieved!! It really looks great!
good work friend! doesn't it feel wonderful to say you are a fmq veteran now! i can't wait to say that about myself... soon... very soon!
OH I LOVE all the colour!
I love the front! And actually love the quilting - it looks like it was made with love :) Thanks for sharing this with us!
I think it is perfect!!
Woo! You did it! I can't wait to see the crinkliness after the dryer. Yay, Jennifer! I'm very proud of you!!
yippee, whoot whoot, hip hip hooray...all these things and more. Your perseverance has paid off. It looks great.
It's adorable! And I love your attitude!
Just keep practising you are well on your way!!
FMQ is a real balancing act between, threads, fibres (both fabric and wadding) and tension. I find a schmetz 90/14 quilting needles work best as the shape of the needle is designed to go through multiple layers. Also I tend to use a 50wt in the bottom and a 40wt in the top and then check my tension. Different wadding will react differently too...often I find I have to tighten the top tension for a thicker wadding. If you think about it you need the top to be tighter to pull on the bobbin thread into the middle of the thickness.
I could go on and on..but those are the main points I could think of...hope they help :o)
It's super lovely! ♥
