| My tiny ice cream cone- This block is 5.5" x 7" |
I used this tutorial and my handy-dandy Add-a-Quarter ruler. (Thanks Courtney!)
That ruler is super as it adds your seam allowance and makes it much easier to paper piece. There are lots of tips and tutorials for using the Add-A-Quarter on their website. I've actually spoken to Carolyn, the lady that designed the Add-a-Quarter ruler, and she is super helpful.
She also recommended using the add-a-quarter ruler when you sew with a template by cutting on the stitching line then you can use the add-a-quarter ruler to add a seam allowance without cutting your template. This might work great for all of you farmer's wives out there!
OK, so back to paper piecing:
Gail, a fellow CLTMQG member, taught a workshop on paper piecing recently and she recommends using a fabric glue stick to dab a little on your first piece of fabric to adhere it to the paper. Don't forget to shorten your stitch length too.
Gail's a big fan of Carol Doak's paper and her website. There are lots of free paper piecing patterns on there too, including one on designing your own blocks.
Hopefully I'll have some time after the Sewing Summit to give paper piecing another try. I think it might be something that gets easier with practice...
What are your thoughts about paper piecing? Have you made your own patterns?

Where do you get your energy from - just finished the QAL and now you are on to PP!
I just want to frame this block and think of summer every time I look at it.
Cute block! I think paper piecing is one of the coolest things ever, but I have yet to tackle it. Do you follow Shape-Moth? She does some cool paper piecing, too, and has a few free patterns and several for sale.
Turned out nice! I'm going to be making a paper-pieced Christmas block I designed, but haven't gotten past the paper part yet. :)
I just got a horrible thought that the next QAL will be paper piecing and I will make myself give it a go. It won't - will it?!!
Amending the last comment - Paper piecing is like zippers to me, I have just avoided them to ignore my lack of ability! I think what you have done is gorgeous.
It`s adorable Jennifer and after 35 C today, I would love a yummy ice-cream! Thanks for your encouraging words on flikr and we`re getting there. Nearly bound.
Your block looks so cute. Hope you'll make and post some more :)
I tried one of Shape Moth's free patterns so far and I liked it very much. I hope to try some more (maybe design my own blocks, too) before the end of the year.
Oh the ice cream is wonderful - as it is summer again here it's just what I need!
Paper-piecing is on my next To Do list for sure x
I love the ice cream cone! I really have not done much paper piecing, but I aim, to, eventually!
I love paper piecing! But I tend to use freezer paper and do the fold, press, cut technique. Then I can reuse the freezer paper because I haven't sewn through it! Same results just different technique ;)
Yay, someone got some use out of my ruler finally! The ice cream block is adorable, great job!!!
I just paper pieced for the first time Last Night! So when I saw this post I had to laugh. I drew my own pattern which may have been a mistake but I was really happy with my results! I would love one of those add a 1/4 rulers.
I love how much more accurate I can be with paper piecing and I find that my only problems with it ever are when I get going too quickly and don't take the time to think about what I'm doing. I have more often that I'd like to admit sewn a piece of fabric upside down or laid it out on the wrong side of the sewing line. Luckily me and my seam ripper are tight.
That is the cutest block!!!!! I have not tried paper piecing yet...this may be the little nudge I needed :o)
Great ice cream cone! Yes, I paper piece but I don't design my own blocks- maybe I should try!
Sheila directed me to Carol Doak when we had to do paper piecing for the mystery quilt. I had never done it before and am now a convert - although I always have to check Carols you tube video to remember where I have to start!
Love the ice cream cone! I like paper piecing, though it can seem a bit tedious until you get in a good rhythm. The star points that result can't be beat!
I love paper piecing and this block is very cute.Well done!!
Love your little PP block. I have done a little bit of paper piecing and really enjoyed it. The ruler was very useful. Here is a site that everyone should check out. A lot of small really cute projects and they are free. http://www.forestquilting.com/masterlistfree.html
Enjoy your weekend!
I am right in the middle of paper piecing too! Have looked at it a few times before but couldn't get my head around it for some reason, because it is soooooooo simple!!
I love paper piecing and you're right, it's soooo much easier with an 'add a quarter' ruler! I've made an occasional pattern but nothing fancy!! Love the ice cream block!
Very cute. I recently signed up to a paper piecing bee, and I have till the end of this month to work out how to do a girl in a dress... I think I can, I think I can, I think I can ;o)
It's my favorite method of pieceing! I'm paper piecing the blocks for a Wedding Ring/Cross of Thorns quilt and I've tried my hand at designing a couple of patterns.
I love Ayumi's work!!!!!!
Really cute block. I am going to give this a try soon.

I love your ice cream cone! It's adorable. I'd love to try paper piecing someday... it's a little intimidating :)
Maybe, one day, in the far distant future, I will be brave enough to try it!
Paper Piecing is easier then it seems. Alex Anderson put out a new book in the fall (2011) that's wonderful for beginners! Very easy to follow.
