The Big Project Reveal!

Ta-Da!

I'm so excited to launch my first Quilt-Along!

I hope you'll jump in and join me in making this fabulous cross quilt. Inspired by the Greek cross block, this quilt is a great way to showcase beautiful, modern fabric in a clean, crisp design.

I'm really excited about this Quilt-Along and the best part is I am co-hosting it with my sweet friend Sarah of FairyFace Designs.
FairyFace Designs

Sarah and I met in blogland, and bonded over quilting, modern fabric, and young families. Sarah's quilts are beautiful and colorful (love her Walk in the Woods), and she has a great eye for design and pattern placement.  Check out her fabulous quilts and her Picture Box tutorial. We both love color, clean lines and dream about fabric so you can see why we get along so well!

Sarah lives in Cork, Ireland and I'm in Charlotte, North Carolina yet despite being across the sea, we've become good friends.  We cooked up an idea to do a joint project and co-designed this quilt-along. I designed the front and Sarah designed the back. Neat, huh?
Lap Size Front

Lap Size Back
I am excited about this QAL because I love the versatility of this cross block, the unlimited variations the overall quilt will have based on fabric choices and the fact that this quilt appeals to both beginners and more experienced quilters.

Plus, this QAL has the very special component of being designed by two friends Across the Sea.
Baby Size Front
Baby Size Back
So, are you excited yet?  Come on, join us!

The Details:

Timeline: This is an 8 week quilt-along that is perfectly suited for beginners as an intro into piecing yet, also a great choice for the more experienced quilter as a way to let the fabrics shine in a modern, clean design.

We'll walk you through the steps to create a beautiful, modern quilt that gives you two for the price of one as the back is as interesting as the front.

Sarah and I will be posting QAL info on Mondays and Thursdays to give you all the information you need.

Sizes: You'll have two size options:

Lap Size - 58" x 70" approx
Baby Size - 46" x 54" approx

The quilt is framed by a scrappy border which is mimicked in one of the blocks on the back. (It looks solid in our mockup but it is actually scrappy.)

Fabrics: Layer cake and fat quarter bundle friendly, this is a quilt that gives you lots of flexibility when selecting fabrics.  You could also easily shop your stash!

The overall look and feel of this quilt will vary greatly based upon fabric choices. This design would work great for an all solids quilt, black and white fabrics, a monochromatic look or a medley of your favorite fabrics.

These are my fabric choices. I still need to edit a bit more.
I'm going to use Kona Ash for the background fabric.

Fabric Requirements:
LAP SIZE (58 x 70):
Cross Fabric: 1 Layer Cake OR 26 Fat Quarters (no repeats) OR 13 Fat Quarters (for 1 repeat) OR scraps size 10” x 10”
Breakdown:
Front: 22 squares of a layer cake OR 20 fat quarters (for no repeats) OR 10 fat quarters (for 1 repeat) or scraps (should be at least 10 x 10)
Scrappy Border: will come from leftovers from all the layer cake squares
Back: 8 squares of a layer cake OR 6 Fat Quarters (no repeats) OR 3 Fat Quarters (1 repeat) or scraps
Background Fabric: 8.5 yards total:
Breakdown:
4 yards of background fabric for the front (blocks and borders)
4.5 yards of background fabric for the back (generous sizing to allow for seam alignment with front)
Batting: 64 x 76
Binding: .5 yard

BABY SIZE (46 x 54):

Cross Fabric: 1 layer cake OR 16 Fat Quarters (for no repeats) OR 8 Fat Quarters (1 repeat) OR scraps (need to be 10" x 10")

Front: 12 squares of a layer cake for the front OR 12 Fat Quarters (for no repeats) OR 6 Fat Quarters (for 1 repeat) OR scraps
Scrappy Border: will come from leftovers from all the layer cake squares
Back: 6 squares of a layer cake OR 4 Fat Quarters (no repeat) OR 2 Fat Quarters (for 1 repeat) or scraps

Sarah's blog has gone a bit funny, can't even leave another comment now. Her code on her button wasn't working either so I grabbed it from you instead. Looking forward to the QAL.

I'm all in for the lap quilt! I can't wait to pick out my fabrics. I just finished my 2nd quilt ever and was thinking...hmm...I think I'll take a break from quilting to work on some home dec projects....Not a chance now. Thx for the motivation. :-)

diane said...

ok, I took the plunge! I'm in!

I really really want to do this. I love this block and have been thinking about it a lot. I'm obsessed with the churn dash block right now and I love that the greek cross is basically the same block, just looks way different using differing prints/placements.

I might just have to do this one.

I had just been looking at the cross quilt on the front of susan beal's log cabin book and thinking I'd like to make one. doubt I'll keep up, but perhaps i'll make a few.

Oh, I think you talked me into it! I really want to finish at least one of the quilts I am working on before I start. Guess I better get to work!

This will be fun! :) Thank you for organizing and planning all of it!

We are both from Germany, but I live near San Francisco since January, so this sew along is made for us.

Saw the quilt along on SOTAK Handmade. I am in--going to make a baby quilt in fun woodland creatures fabric. Looking forward to cutting the fabric!

Having sorted all my fabric at the weekend this looks like the perfect project to use up some of my many fat quarters I've been hoarding!

Elena said...

Jen! Ok, so I cut up my Heirloom prints last night, and decided on Kona Bright Pink for my background. So bright and fun!
Now what do you think about the backing? I'm ordering my pink, so I'm already getting stuff. Maybe something more toned down to compensate for the front's brightness? What do you think?

Jennifer,
Just wanted to pass along a "Thank you" for hosting the ATS QAL :). Though I am very late to the party, I did use your tutorial to make my own Across the Seas Quilt. I made a 42 block queen size quilt for our friends in St. Petersburg, Russia, and my wife and I were there last week to deliver it to them. It was a big hit! Anyhow, thanks again for the QAL and your wonderful blog, which I read regularly :)
Sincerely,

Patrick
