A Chat and a Giveaway!

Welcome, welcome to another installment of CHAT at Ellison Lane Quilts.

So glad you're here!
Today, I'm so happy to be chatting with the wonderfully talented and very sweet Amy Ellis of Amy's Creative Side. She is a mother, a sewist, a creative thinker, and an author. She's also the other brilliant mind behind the Sewing Summit.
So pull up your comfy chair and let's chat!

ELQ: Amy you are quite a talented and skilled sewist. How long have you been sewing and quilting?
Amy: I learned to sew garments as a girl!  My mom is a seamstress, and I wanted to learn, however, since she’s left handed she signed me up for 4-H so that it wouldn’t be backwards for me at all.  From there I soaked up as much as possible, and had lots of fun.  It was definitely a great place to learn and cultivate a love of fabric and handmade items.
ELQ: How wonderful to have grown up with the skills!
photo

ELQ: Blogger's Quilt Festival is such a happy gathering of creative inspiration.  What prompted you to start it and how has it grown?
Thank you!  It’s so fun to gather the quilting community online into one spot, and watch as friendships are made, and inspiration found.  There’s been a number of people that have started blogs just so they could participate as well - as blogging is one of my favorite things, I love that I’ve inspired people that way as well!
photo
The main thing that prompted me to begin BQF was the fact that most of us online, don’t have a reason to go to Quilt Market, so I created a diversion!
ELQ: Love that reason! And I know that when I first found BQF I did not have a blog yet so once I got started, I looked so forward to being a part of the festival. I know it will be something I'll take part in each time.

photo

ELQ: You have a fabulous new book out, Modern Basics.  What was the process like, writing it, creating the patterns, etc?
When I first started blogging (3 ½ years ago), I was so inspired!  I started sketching ideas, and before I knew it, I had a bunch of great ideas. Then I had to figure out how to share them with everyone else.

photo
Producing a book takes awhile, contract in hand, I was beyond busy for the four months I was given to produce 12 quilts. Thankfully it was the dead of winter, and there’s not much reason to go out (save picking my girls up from school!).  Thankfully I had help with the quilting - Natalia, did a beautiful job quilting all of them, and I finished up the bindings by hand in about 2 weeks.

Once everything was turned in, we added two more quilts, so I was working on those and communicating daily with my technical editor.  Then it was just a matter of waiting for the other pieces to fall into place, the graphic artist and photographer needed time to work their magic, and 10 months after my deadline -- I had my advance copy in my hands!  It was a lot of work, but in the end very rewarding - I love seeing other people’s fabric choices!
photoELQ: Wow! That is a lot of hard work but I am so glad it has paid off for you. Your book is wonderful!

photo
ELQ: Do you have a favorite project in the book, or one that holds particularly special meaning?
That is a really hard question!  I would love to make some of them again and again - I think maybe Knotted Squares, and Graduation would be my top two.  At least at this moment!

ELQ: The Sewing Summit is coming up in 3 months and looks to be fantastic! How did you and Erin come up with the idea?
We both love the online sewing community, and realized the lack of conferences specifically for sewing bloggers.  And so we set out to make an event for those that don’t attend Market, would love to connect in person, and further hone their sewing skills!  I know for myself, the friends I’ve made online are some of the best I have, so having a chance to actually meet them in person - beyond exciting!
ELQ: Those are all the reasons I'm excited about going. You and Erin have put together something sure to be fabulous!

photo

ELQ: What aspects of the Sewing Summit are you most excited about?
Meeting online friends!  And the classes that we’ve lined up.  I hope there’s enough time to sleep!
ELQ: I know- I can't wait to meet everybody, and I don't want to miss anything!

The Sewing Summit

ELQ: Can you give us any more SS scoop of what to expect or any hints about some fun surprises?
All the classes that we have lined up are going to be fantastic.  We are really excited about the teachers that we have set up!  There are meet ups and networking sessions too.  Something different for everyone!  We do have a few surprises left too; we are finalizing a few more details, then we will be able to share with everyone!
ELQ: Keeping us in suspense I see! OK, we'll I'll try to be patient. :)

photo
ELQ: What is your favorite completed quilt?
This is such a hard question!  Each of my kids have a quilt on their bed that I made for them, those are really special, and the Wonderland quilt that went in with my Modern Basics proposal holds special meaning too.  So five favorites - does that work?  haha
ELQ: I know what you mean. My favorite quilt is often the one I am working on at the moment- until the next idea takes hold!

ELQ: You inspire others with your talent and skills. What inspires you?
I’m inspired everywhere I turn!  Inspiration really is everywhere!  From the tile patterns in a restaurant or mall, to the artwork my girls bring home from school, I’m constantly telling anyone who will listen “that’s a quilt!”  Since publishing Modern Basics, I also upgraded from graph paper to EQ7, which is fun, because I can immediately see if my idea will work in a quilt!
ELQ: Oh I imagine that would be awesome! So nice to have a great tool like that at your fingertips when inspiration strikes. I am not very familiar with EQ7 so I look forward to checking it out further!
Thanks Amy, for chatting with me! I so enjoyed getting to know you better and am looking so forward to meeting you at the Sewing Summit in October!
Intrigued by Amy's book Modern Basics? Would you like to win one? Well of course you would! (Thanks Amy!!)
To be entered in the giveaway, simply leave a comment telling me why you love to quilt and/or sew.

I love to quilt because it takes my mind off of all the issues in my every day life and helps with my depression issues. It's truly a life saver.

I love to sew because of the satisfaction it gives.

I love sewing because it's fun giving people handmade gifts. Also, every time I think about the naughty things I did as a kid, I want to make another thing for my mom to make up for it! :D

I like the idea of creating something useful. Sewing is a great way to spend my free time - much better than watching TV!

I love being a quilter because it gives me an outlet for creativity and brings an extra dimension to my days. When I'm weeding the vegetable garden, for example, I'm thinking about which fabrics I'll be using to make Amy's Knotted Square quilt. (It will be Chrysalis!)

I love to sew because it allows me to relax and express my creative side. I'm a very very new quilter and I enjoy it so far. It is quite a challenge for me, but I love geometric designs, so it's right up my alley!

Quilting stimulates my creative side and relaxes me. One of my daughters is working on her first quilt, and it has been a great way for us to bond.

I love to quilt because nothing beats a handmade gift. Anyone can buy something at the mall....but on Christmas morning when someone opens up one of my quilts - their smile is priceless.

I have always been creative and have a degree in painting, I don't really know why sewing has taken hold of me but I do love it I am addicted!!!

I love quilting because I feel productive and creative (even if I'm just following a pattern) and because it is something that is "mine" at my house!

Annabella said...

I love quilting because you are creating a work of art, which is practical and comforting at the same time.

I love to quilt because it appeals to my crafy side in many different ways. I can quilt in a spontaneous, thrown together method when i feel like flying by the seat of my pants (my carefree side), or it can be very mathematical and calculated when i feel like planning and working out every little detail (my OCD side). i also love that i can work on several things at once, picking up and putting down projects depending on my mood (my ADHD side). Most of all, I love that quilting has such history and I love being part of that. :D

I love creating pretty, snuggly things... whether quilts, pillows or softies, they all make me smile and bring joy to those to whom I gift them.

I also love the creative outlet and the challenge - I learn something new with each project I take on and it just feels good after sitting for 9 hours at a boring desk job... keeps me sane! :)

I love to quilt because I love to play with the fabric and see what kinds of patterns emerge throughout the creative process. Thanks so much for the great interview and the chance to win!

I love sewing and quilting, I just get so much enjoyment from the whole process.

I love creating functional things for people. I love it when someone tells me a need and I can create something to fill it. I do a few things occasionally on commission, but it is mostly to buy supplies just so I can create and give!

My favorite thing about sewing/quilting is being able to make anything I put my mind to. There are so many gorgeous fabrics out there, I'll have something like no one else.

I love to quilt for many reasons, mostly based on the joy it brings to me and to the recipients of the quilts. But something happened earlier today that was a big reminder of the impact a small gesture can have. I quickly made a lap quilt this past weekend for my in-laws' longtime neighbor who had been ill and was being moved to a re-hab facility. I thought a quilt would brighten up his room. Sadly, about the time the quilt was finished he took a turn for the worse and last night he died. His wife asked if it would be okay to drape the quilt on his casket because she felt he would like that. Then after the funeral, it would comfort her and their son. Brings a shiver and a tear just thinking about it.

Katherine said...

If you asked my sons the reason why I sew/quilt, the answer, quite simply, is because it makes me happy. (Whenever I'm "not myself", my sons will say, "Mom, go sew something. You'll feel better." Who am I to argue? LOL

Sewing calms me down. I love the process and feel of the sewing machine humming under my hands. I also love the finished products (usually!!!) I can totally loose myself in sewing, love it!!! The book looks great, thanks for the giveaway :)

I love Amy's blog! I think what I like most about sewing/quilting is choosing fabrics. And there's a sense of accomplishment at the end of a big project. :)

Kay Stephenson said...

Quilt design is like playtime for me and sitting at the machine in the act of turning that design into an actual quilt is the most relaxing thing in the world. Though I started sewing when I was about 12 years old, I only took up quilting within the past five years and just wish I had started sooner.

I love to quilt and sew because I find it very relaxing. I also want to create something beautiful to give to my family.

I love to quilt and sew because it is something I do well. I often feel like I don't have a lot to offer (I was never good in school) and this gets me the pat on the back from people, and who doesn't like praise. The simple joy of giving a gift you have made is praise enough!

Sarah @ FairyFace Designs said...

I find sewing and quilting so relaxing - because I have to concentrate on what I'm doing, it pushes all my other worries and stresses out of my mind....and I end up with something lovely! Great giveaway, would love to win this one :-)

I am such a fan of Amy's and am so glad you interviewed her today. I love to sew and quilt because it allows me to be creative, produce something tangible I am proud of, and to be an individual. I make a lot of my clothes and accent/tweak other pieces in my wardrobe as well. Quilting is such a great outlet for creativity. You get to design something using your own style and the recipient always has a big smile on their face. Thanks!

I started sewing when I was 6 or 7. I would spend time with my grandma during the summers. When I was in junior high I took my first sewing class and I was hooked. I mostly sewed clothes until I was married and had young children. I wanted to make quilts for my babies, and haven't stopped quilting yet. Now I'm making quilts for grandbabies. It is so much fun to express myself in my work.

I enjoy the whole process and seeing little squares turn into a cohesive quilt amazes me and keeps me going.

I'm from a family of "makers". Makers of pretty much anything and everything. Making is what we do. And handmade gifts and belonging have always been treasured and handed down. We recognize the heart, imagination and skill that go into them. I love to carry that "makerism" on and leave a legacy of making for my own children and ... maybe someday ... grandchildren.

Elena said...

I love sewing/quilting because I'm making nothing into something...and it's even useful!

Ella said...

Lots of reasons.
I like the community...trying out something new. That "A HA" moment when something you were not getting clicks.
The colors and fabrics...the repetition (it's soothing)...
the challenge...the excitement when someone you made something for likes it.
