Here's my pincushion.
Pretty sad, right?
I really want to make a new one-something fun like this one, or this one or this one.
The thing is, I don't know what to put in them to weigh them down and keep the pins sharp. Any suggestions?
What do you put in your pincushions?

We used crushed walnut shells. You can get it at the pet store.

you can try emery sand. That's the stuff in your little dangling strawberry. It sharpens pins you stick in it :)
I made one so far, and I really want to make more. I filled mine with poly fill, and stuffed it quite full. I didn't think about keeping the pins sharp though.....hummm.
Here's mine (well, I gave it to my daughter)

I made a cute house pin cushion once- it was quite large- about 6 inches high and the pattern suggesting putting a little calico bag of lead shot in the bottom. Luckily the quilt shop sold the lead shot too! It does make the pinnie lovely and solid!
I have stuffed them with batting and put a piece of steel wool at the top if you want to keep the pins sharp!
I have the same pin cushion as you and have found my pins are getting very dull. I can't wait to make one of my own and use these helpful ideas. Thanks for posting the question...I love reading all of the suggestions.
I am laughing out loud at this post. First thought when I saw the pic was "Hey how did she get a picture of my pin cushion?" It looks exactly the same pins and all. I have been complaining about it for months because it is too small and starts rolling all around when I try to stick pins in with one hand. I want to make a new one two and had the same questions. Thanks for the post and the laugh.
I meant new one or two in my last post. lol
A combination of both crushed walnut shells and polyfil makes a good pincushion that is both heavy, but not too solid. I do like Mary's idea about adding steel wool! BTW the walnut shells from Petco (or other pet stores) are way cheaper than the small bags sold at many LQSs - about $13 for 10 dry quarts, which is a really big bag! Ask for lizzard litter. Also, I still have my first pincusion, which was a 4-H sewing project, from 1958. It's still going strong and in those days, we filled our wool pincusions with carded sheep's wool. I have newer ones, but I'm very sentimental about that somewhat ratty-looking old pinkeep ;-)
I have the same problem, been looking in our pet shops here and can't find walnut shells... I won a pincushion a few months ago and love it but fancy having a go at making one myself.... if I can find something to put inside it.
Hi, Jennifer: I make pincushions out of selvages and use the crushed walnut shells from the pet store.
P.S. Would you like to have a selvage with your name on it to incorporate? Let me know!
That's funny! :) I like the inspiration cushions. Like the new one you just made too. :) I made one with sand. It was the prettiest sand, pristine with a green tint. It was included in a kit I got from a shop in Canada. I've also seen emery. Who knew that was a mineral? Not me.
