Big 5 Blog Party: Meet Lindsey of LR Stitched!

Welcome to the Big 5 Blog Party!

So glad you're here!

I've got a great lineup of 5 blogger interviews this week.  Be sure to check back each day for an introduction to another great blogger you should know and a chance to win the giveaway.

This beautiful fat quarter bundle (2 yards total) of Moda Crossweaves could be yours thanks to Sew Fresh Fabrics
Plus this cute necklace from The Bead Bouquet, an Etsy jewelry shop is also included.
I am so excited to introduce you to the first Big 5 blogger from our Blog Party.

Lindsey is the creative spark behind LR Stitched.

She and I had a chance to meet in person a few weeks ago, and we hit it off instantly. I know you'll find her fun, smart and inspiring too.

Here is some of Lindsey's amazing work:

Lindsey's use of color and modern fabrics really inspire me.  Plus, she's so well rounded. Look at these darling appliques!

Meet Lindsey!

How did you get started quilting/modern quilting?
Well, I started sewing when I was 16. After my grandmother passed away, we discovered that she had written my name on the bottom of her sewing machine. I mainly sewed clothing and accessories. Three years ago one of my friends was diagnosed with cancer. She was young and had just had a baby. I was so heartbroken for her and felt like there weren't any words that would tell her how much I cared for her. I wanted to comfort her and decided on a whim that I would 'wrap her in love'. Three generations before me were quilters and I just decided I can do this! I made my first quilt for her out of a jelly roll of Tula Pink's 'Nest' line. It definitely had flaws, but she loved it and felt loved. That's what mattered! (and the best news, now she is cancer free!) I quickly became addicted to the process and quilting has taken over most of my sewing! Quilting allows so much solitude as you piece and press and has become one of my favorite ways to unwind.

What is your favorite fabric line and what’s on your fabric wish list?
Anything Anna Maria Horner. I love her Garden Party line and have hoarded quite a bit. Definitely on my list is her newest line coming out, Loulouthi.

What inspires you most?

Life in general. I love the way I see things now. Could a certain architectural design become a quilt? Making new color schemes based on what's blooming around me. I love looking out for inspiration in the every day.

What type of machine do you sew with?
I sew with a Bernina Activa 230 'White Pearl'.

Describe your dream sewing studio.
Oh geez. It would be big, with lots and lots of natural light. Hardwood floors so I wouldn't have to curse while trying to vacuum up stray threads. Lots of storage space, both visible and hidden which would mean I could have more fabric, ha! Hmm... a long arm machine, lots of desk space to be able to spread out. A dedicated design wall that could hold a king size quilt. I think that would be about perfect!

photo
What is your favorite go-to tool and why?

Right now it's Clover Flower Head fine pins. I was recently introduced to them at a quilt guild meeting and they are awesome! I can sew right over them when piecing which is wonderful.

Tell us about your favorite completed quilt or sewing project.

I think it's my entry for the 2nd Project Modern Challenge
It was something that really pushed me outside of my comfort zone and helped me try several new techniques.
photo
What traditional pattern do you like to put a modern twist on?

I'm in the middle of a Dresden Plate for a sewing bee.

It's the only traditional pattern that I've worked on, and I am really loving it with modern fabrics! I have many favorites I would like to try, specifically a Double Wedding Ring but it will probably be awhile before I'm ready for that challenge!

Do you have a process for choosing fabric for a project?
My biggest process is to not use fabrics solely from the same line. I prefer to mix and match lines together to come up with my own 'collection'. I only buy fabrics that I absolutely love, not because they are sold to go together. I think in doing that it allows you to have more unique quilts. It's not likely that someone else will have the exact same stash as you do. I love an eclectic look. When it comes time to start a new project I pick a 'base' color and pull fabrics from my stash that have similar shades of that color and mix and match from there.

What work-in-progress are you most excited about?

Right now it's probably the Dresden quilt for my little girl. The blocks are starting to roll in from the members in my bee and I'm finishing up the extras that I need to complete the quilt. I can hardly wait to put it all together! I find myself staring at my design wall and thinking forward to how excited I'll be to pull it from the dryer!

What’s your favorite part of the quilting process?
I love hand stitching the binding. I've had a lot of people comment that I'm weird for loving that part! I think it's because I know at that point, the quilt is so close to being done and being able to sit and relax while doing it.

Thanks Lindsey for stopping by and sharing a bit of yourself with us!
At this time comments are closed.

Now, on to the giveaway!

I love that she was inspired to sew and quilt by her grandmother. I think a love of creating with fabric is something that is passed on generation to generation even though it may not be realized until later in life. Thanks for the giveaway! Kathy

I love hearing how people get into quilting/sewing. I could relate to sewing for her friend when she was diagnosed - it seems like something to do with our hands for others when we can't take the situation away. What a blessing to be able to share that!
